Another year of football gone, another year of the Patriots in the Super Bowl, and another year of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick continuing their winning streak of greatness.
At this point, it’s almost unheard of to not see Tom Brady playing on the first Sunday in february. Both he and legendary coach Bill Belichick combine to form the best player-coach combo in NFL history. With the conclusion of Super Bowl LIII, the two of them have now been to nine Super Bowls, with an impressive record of 6-3 in those games.
The game itself was fairly slow and one of the lowest scoring Super Bowls ever, with neither the Rams or Patriots scoring more than a field goal until the fourth quarter. Leave it to the Pats to close when it matters most though, and close they did when Sony Michel scored a touchdown halfway through the fourth. The Rams were unable to answer, which led to Brady and Belichick continuing their league-wide dominance.
Brady is 41 now, and will be 42 at this time next year. Few have been as skilled and talented as Brady has, with the resume to support it. Nonetheless, father time is undefeated and the 2019-2020 season serves as the last on his Tom’s contract. There is plenty of speculation that next year may be his last, and with him will end the great coach-player combo.
Belichick will be entering his 20th consecutive year with the Pats this next season, and has cemented his place as one of the best coaches of all time. There isn’t much else Belichick needs to do or prove, and with Brady inevitably heading towards hanging it up soon, there has been speculation he might soon retire from coaching.
There is some evidence supporting this, with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels receiving a long contract extension recently. Nobody really knows what either legend will do other than themselves, but the clock is working against them at this point. What we do know is that the pair have combined for unprecedented NFL success and we are currently witnessing greatness.
Fortunately for the Patriots, they’re sitting pretty now with 6 championships, tying the Pittsburgh Steelers. They’ve found a pleasant surprise in young stud Sony Michel and still have a great defense to boot. Nothing can replace a pair like Brady and Belichick, but at least the dynamic pair will still be around one more year.
