Big Ten Best Teams To Watch

Purdue Boilermakers

The Boilermakers are going to be the top seed in the Big 10 tournament, and are also the highest nationally ranked team in the Big 10. They sit as a top five team in the nation in late February, but will be falling in the newest poll. Purdue dropped three of four games to close the month of February. They also dropped all three matchups against ranked opponents in the month. Their body of work as a whole is without question the best in the conference. That said they are playing through their worst stretch of ball on the season. Purdue is a team that is wildly reliant on the scoring and rebounding from center Zach Edey. He accounts for nearly a third of their points and rebounding, and one game where he’s off form or in foul trouble could see the top seed bounced.

Indiana Hoosiers

Indiana may well be becoming the most daunting team to face in the Big 10. The Hoosiers won not once, but twice against Purdue in the month of, February. This Indiana team may well be one that is coming to form at the right time, but have also had their hiccups. Their two losses in the month came to Northwestern and Michigan State. Northwestern is a completely understandable loss, but the MSU hiccup is far less forgivable. The Hoosiers are similar to the Boilermakers in that they are quite reliant on one player for a large chunk of production, albeit to a lesser extent. For them it is forward Trayce Jackson-Davis. Any game in which he does not play or is limited will likely be a loss for the Hoosiers.

Northwestern Wildcats

In mid February, Northwestern looked primed to get scorching hot at the right time, and perhaps close the season atop the Big Ten standings. They were on a five-game win streak that included wins over both Purdue and Indiana. Excitement was beginning to build, only to come to a screeching halt. They lost their next two games on the road against lesser opponents, and it will be intriguing to see how they are able to close out their regular season. Northwestern is a smaller team than Purdue or Indiana. They are reliant on production from guards Boo Buie and Chase Audige. They are perhaps not the highest ceiling team in the Big Ten, but perhaps the one at the top best equipped to survive an off game from a top player.

Remainder Of The Conference

The Big Ten has a gaggle of competent teams behind the top three. Starting with the Maryland Terrapins, they match both Northwestern and Indiana in both conference and overall records. There is an alarming note to make on Maryland: they have won just two road games all season, which may not bode well for neutral court tournament time.

The Michigan Wolverines did not play well out of conference, but they have matched Indiana, Northwestern, and Maryland with an 11-7 conference record. Michigan lacks true quality wins and it is fair to wonder if there is a truly attainable ceiling come tournament time. It also speaks to the relative depth of the conference and the parity within it.

If the above five teams were not enough to convince you of the parity within the conference, perhaps the next four will. All of Illinois, Iowa, Rutgers, and Michigan State are over .500 within the conference and carry an overall record of 17-11 or better. Even if not winning the Big Ten tournament, these teams will be scraping and clawing for every win in an attempt to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

How To Bet On The 2023 Big Ten Tournament

The Big Ten tournament, while higher on significance and excitement than run of the mill games, falls under the same umbrella as all college basketball games when it comes to betting. There are a great many ways to bet, and we will make sure you are at a full understanding of how to attack each type of wager.

Moneyline Betting

Moneyline betting is a wager on a particular team to win that given game. The moneyline bet is quite common among those available in college basketball. This bet typically applies to which team is winning when the game goes final, so any overtime period is including. Be sure to note that these wagers are on final scores and not the end of regulation.

Against The Spread Betting

Against the spread bets are wagers that use a point spread to level the expected outcome. These bets are among the most, if not the most popular overall, variety of bet for college basketball wagering. Against the spread wagering is available at all top sportsbooks for college basketball. In this market, sportsbooks put out a betting line, that is essentially a handicap in points. A plus figure is assigned to underdogs while a minus figure is assigned to favorites. For a hypothetical example, we will envision Purdue as a -6.5 favorite over Indiana. If you bet on Purdue at -6.5, they must score win by at least seven points for the bet to be a winner. Conversely, a bet on Indiana at +6.5 would require them to win outright or lose by fewer than seven points to be a winner.

Total Betting

Total, or over/under, betting is another common type of wager in all basketball events. Totals are offered by all top sportsbooks in the US. A total is a figure for total points scored in college basketball games. The set total will be created by oddsmakers and presented by each sportsbook. In this market, you are wagering on the total number of points that will be scored by both teams in combination. Your bet is whether the final score of the game goes over or under the set total.

Parlay and Teaser Betting

Parlays are bets that garner a larger return on odds, but are more difficult to win. Parlays are bets in which two or more specified bets are combined into one one wager. The raised degree of difficulty on requiring multiple correct selections to win is the trade off for improved odds returns. If all legs of the parlay are graded winners, the bettor receives a much larger payout than they would have on individual flat bets. Parlays can span multiple college basketball games or can even be a single game parlay, which is an option offered by most sportsbooks in recent months. Parlays are quite popular due to increased odds returns. Be careful however, as just one losing leg means the parlay bet is a loser.

A teaser is a variation of a parlay that uses more favorable lines which in turn are more likely to win, but do not bring the increased odds on payouts a more traditional parlay does. Teasers can be tempting, but it is generally recommended to avoid these low value bets.

Props

Prop betting is a unique and fun betting option that may or may not include the outcome of a given. Prop bets have a wide range, and can be on alternate lines or outcomes on the result of the game. They also can be, and are increasingly more common, to be based on player’s statistical output. As an example of a prop bet that is not player related, you can bet on the team to be leading at halftime. For a player prop example, you can bet on a player to score over or under their betting line of points. rebounds, assists, or a variety of other statistical categories.

Big Ten Tournament Betting Strategy

In the Big Ten, and with the other tournaments, we will be looking for odds value on the overall tournament winner. That is unlikely to come with the very top seeds and we will be scouring every stat as we look to find the gems with huge returns.

Obviously, the overall tournament winner is not the only bets we will be placing on the Big Ten Tournament. We will have a total of 13 games over the five day period. Once we have those matchups established we will have those best bets bets, every day, right here.

Big Ten Tournament History

The United Center will host this year’s tournament, but there are other prominent locations in which the Big Ten tournament has been played as well. Those include Lucas Oil Stadium, Madison Square Garden, The Verizon Center and Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Big Ten tournament does not go back as far historically as some of the other prominent conferences. The first year the tournament was played was 1998in , with the Michigan Wolverines becoming the inaugural champion. Robert “Tractor” Traylor was named the most outstanding player. That win was vacated however due to infractions committed a decade earlier. Michigan won the tournament on two other occasions, officially slotting them in with the sixth most wins in the tournament’s history. Michigan also holds the honor of being the highest seed to go on to win the tournament, as the 8 seed in 2017.

The next two consecutive seasons would see Michigan State handily beat Illinois in the championship game. Michigan State would go on to win the Big Ten tournament four more times, all between 2012 and 2019, making them the all time tournament wins leader with six.

Ohio State checks in as the next best, with four wins, which does not count their vacated tournament win in 2022. Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa have all won the the Big Ten Tournament three times. Iowa is the most notable of which as they are the 2022 champion. They won the tournament final against Purdue last season.

Some Big Ten tournament historical notes:

  • The top seed has won the tournament just once since 2015 and twice since 2012.
  • The 1 seed has won the tournament nine times, while the 2 seed has won eight times.
  • The 3 seed has won just twice, and the 4 seed’s only win was in the inaugural season of the tournament.
  • Since 2016, Michigan is the only team to reach the final more than once.
  • After not winning once prior to 2018, the 5 seed has won two of the last four tournaments.
