Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills won the AFC East last season, winning in Miami in Week 18 to seal up the division title. Josh Allen struggled with turnovers throughout the season, but the defense of the Bills was good enough to make up for any struggles Allen encountered. This year, the Bills are slight favorites to win this division once again. There was plenty of concern about how the Bills would perform without Stefon Diggs around for Allen to throw to, but that has not been a problem early in the year for Buffalo.
New York Jets
With one move, the New York Jets thought they turned themselves into instant contenders in the AFC East last season. They traded for Aaron Rodgers, which represented a significant upgrade at the quarterback position from Zach Wilson and Joe Flacco. But the Jets lost Rodgers for the season in Week 1, and their hopes of winning this division were lost with him.
This year, Rodgers is on the field for the Jets, with no apparent health issues holding him back just yet. That will need to remain the case if the Jets are going to end up in contention to win this division and give themselves a chance to get back to the postseason. Early on, the Jets are right in contention with the Bills for the top spot in the AFC East, but an embarrassing Week 4 loss to the Denver Broncos has raised some red flags.
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins had a great chance to win the AFC East this past year, but they fell just short in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills in a winner-take-all game. Miami held a touchdown lead in that game in the second half, but they could not put any points on the board in the final 30 minutes. This year, the Dolphins are in danger of not even making the playoffs, as an early concussion for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has landed him on injured reserve with the Dolphins unable to reliably get the ball to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
New England Patriots
For many years, the New England Patriots were a dynasty at the top of the AFC East. But they finished at the bottom of the division in 2023, as they had the worst record in the AFC last season. New England has drafted a new quarterback in Drake Maye to go with a new head coach in Jerod Mayo. Maye is sitting behind Jacoby Brissett early this season, which is likely good for his development. But the Patriots have struggled early on, with the question being when the switch to Maye will be made.
2024 AFC East Futures Prediction
There is a case to be made that any team in the AFC East can finish in first place this season, with the exception of the Patriots. For now, we will go with Buffalo to win the division, as they look poised to be the most complete team in the division, especially with Tagovailoa’s injury situation likely to put the brakes on the offense of the Dolphins for at least a month.
