The 2022-2023 men’s basketball regular season is nearing its end, and the ACC tournament is rapidly approaching. With an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line, ACC teams will compete to secure a spot in the Big Dance, improve their tournament seeding, and hopefully create an easier path for themselves to reach the 2023 Men’s Final Four in Houston, Texas.

2023 ACC Tournament Betting Odds

The 2022-2023 men’s college basketball season has been somewhat of a down year for the ACC, as they have just the seventh-best average NET ranking of its members among all NCAA conferences and trail the Big East, Mountain West, and Pac-12, among others. This is largely due to the recent struggles of traditionally-strong programs such as Louisville, Notre Dame, and Florida State as well as the underachievements of College Basketball Blue Bloods Duke and North Carolina.

However, there are still plenty of quality teams in the ACC that are poised to make a deep run in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Virginia, Miami, and several others look to cap off their impressive regular-season performances with some quality victories in the ACC Tournament and gain some momentum as they prepare for March Madness.

Where is the 2023 ACC Tournament Taking Place?

The 2023 ACC men’s basketball tournament will be held at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro, nicknamed Tournament Town, will be hosting the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament for the 29th year, which is by far the most of any city. Raleigh and Charlotte are tied for second, having each hosted the ACC Tournament 13 times throughout the history of the conference.

After a one-year hiatus, in which the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament was played at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, the prestigious event will return to the Greensboro Coliseum. The venue will also serve as the host to the 2023 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament.

A different program has won in each of the previous five ACC Tournaments held in Greensboro (Duke in 2011, Miami in 2013, Virginia in 2014, Notre Dame in 2015, and Georgia Tech in 2021), and it will be interesting to see if this trend continues.

2023 ACC Tournament Format and Schedule

The ACC Tournament is single elimination with seeding being determined by each team’s regular-season conference record. The top four seeds receive a double bye, meaning they advance directly to the quarterfinals. The 5-9 seeds earn a single bye, meaning they advance directly to the second round. Lastly, the 10-15 seeds will compete against one another in the first round, hoping to survive and advance their way through the tournament.

ACC Teams To Watch

There has been a decent amount of parity among men’s basketball teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Although certain teams have made their way to the top of the standings, home-court advantage has seemed to be one of the most important factors in any given matchup. As a result, the neutral-site games offered by the ACC Tournament are likely to help the contenders rise above the pretenders.

Virginia Cavaliers

In recent history, the Virginia Cavaliers have always been one of the top teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. This year is no different. Virginia has already earned victories against Baylor, Illinois, Duke, and NC State and is on track to earn a top-four seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Unsurprisingly, the Cavaliers have the conference’s best defense (in terms of overall defensive efficiency and opponent points per game) and also are quite good at taking care of the ball, as they have one of the top assist/turnover ratios in the country. Virginia is led by senior guards Armaan Franklin and Kihei Clark, and they hope to help the team earn its first ACC Tournament title since 2018.

Miami Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes, on the other hand, boast the ACC’s top offense. They lead the conference in offensive efficiency, points per game, and field goal percentage. After a loss to the eventual national champion Kansas Jayhawks in the Elite Eight of last year’s NCAA Tournament, Jim Larrañaga and the Hurricanes seem to have what it takes to make an even deeper run in the tournament this year.

Led by junior guard Isaiah Wong, the Hurricanes have earned quality wins over teams such as Virginia, Providence, Duke, NC State, and Rutgers. Miami will look to secure its first ACC Tournament Championship since the 2012-2013 season.

Duke Blue Devils

Coming off a Final Four appearance in last year’s tournament, the Duke Blue Devils have not exactly lived up to the program’s high expectations for the 2022-2023 season. However, Duke is always a threat to make some noise in both the ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament.

Under first-year Head Coach Jon Scheyer, the Blue Devils have played a fairly difficult schedule compared to other ACC teams and have come away with respectable wins against teams such as Xavier, Iowa, and Miami while suffering narrow losses to Kansas and Virginia. Duke will hope to win the ACC Tournament for the 13th time since 1999.

How To Bet on the 2023 ACC Tournament

Sports bettors can make several different types of wagers on the 2023 ACC Tournament and all its matchups. Some of the most common betting options are explained in detail below!

Moneyline Bets

Moneyline betting is generally considered to be the easiest way to bet on sporting events. You simply choose the team you think is going to win in a given matchup. If your pick is correct, you will receive a full payout!

However, it is important to understand that the winnings will be fairly low when you pick a team that is a heavy favorite in their matchup. For example, the payout would be quite small if you placed a moneyline bet on the tournament-favorite Virginia Cavaliers to beat the struggling Louisville Cardinals in an ACC Tournament game. However, the payout would increase significantly if you chose to place a moneyline bet on Virginia against a quality opponent like Miami.

On the other hand, the winnings would be much higher if you chose a significant underdog to upset a heavy favorite. For example, if you picked the Louisville Cardinals to upset the Virginia Cavaliers in a matchup, you would win much more money than if you chose Miami to upset Virginia.

Point Spreads

Another common way to bet is by betting on a matchup’s point spread. Instead of betting on a game’s winner, you are betting on the margin of victory or defeat. The point spread set by a sportsbook essentially gives the underdog a handicap based on the amount by which they are expected to lose the game.

For example, Duke may be a 7.5-point favorite against Virginia Tech. You will then choose Duke -7.5, meaning you think Duke will win by eight points or more, or Virginia Tech +7.5, meaning you think Virginia Tech will lose by seven points or less or win the game outright. If you place a bet on Duke to cover the 7.5-point spread, you will get a larger payout than if you placed a moneyline bet on Duke to just win the game outright.

Over/Under (Totals)

For each matchup, you can place a bet on whether you think the total points scored by the two teams combined will be higher or lower than expected. If the over/under total for an ACC Tournament matchup between Virginia Tech and Notre Dame was set at 151.5 points, you would choose to bet the over if you think 152 or more points will be scored by the end of the game. On the other hand, you could bet the under if you think 151 or fewer combined points will be scored.

Parlay Bets

To increase your potential winnings when betting on the 2023 ACC Tournament, you may choose to pair together two or more outcomes by placing a parlay bet. If you bet on Florida State to cover the spread against NC State and Wake Forest to cover the spread against Syracuse, you would receive a larger payout if both picks were correct! However, you would lose the parlay if either of the individual bets was unsuccessful.

Teasers

If the point spreads for a certain round of the ACC Tournament do not seem appealing to you, then you may consider placing a teaser bet. Teasers allow the bettor to change the spread for the games of their choice, making each bet more likely to win. However, it is important to note that as you adjust the spread by a greater amount of points, the payout will decrease.

A specific example would be if Florida State was favored by seven points against Georgia Tech and Boston College was favored by nine points against Louisville. The bettor could place a four-point teaser bet, making Florida State just a three-point favorite and Boston College just a five-point favorite. If both Florida State and Boston College covered these new point spreads, the customer would win the wager!

Prop Bets

For certain games in the ACC Tournament, you can choose to place prop bets that are generally not directly related to the final outcome of a game. There are a seemingly infinite number of prop bets to choose from across different sports and events, but a common example is betting on a player’s individual stats.

For example, if you think North Carolina forward Armando Bacot will have an above-average performance in the second round of the ACC Tournament, you may choose to place a prop bet on Bacot scoring above 16.5 points or having more than 10.5 rebounds in the game.

Futures

Another common betting option is the future bet. Futures betting allows you to attempt to predict an outcome well in advance of when it could happen. For example, you may choose to place a bet on the Virginia Cavaliers to win the ACC Tournament Championship at +300 odds before the first round even begins. If you placed a $100 bet on Virginia and the Cavaliers claim the ACC title on March 11, you would win $300 as a result!

2023 ACC Tournament Best Bets

The ACC Tournament is not always easy to predict and is often full of surprises. However, based on the teams’ performances throughout the entire season and the momentum they will carry into March, the best bets for the 2023 ACC Tournament have been provided below in the form of three teams that were selected as the Top Choice, Best Value, and Sleeper Pick.

Top Choice: Miami (+375)

Choosing between the ACC’s clear top two teams was no easy task: the Virginia Cavaliers and the Miami Hurricanes. However, the Hurricanes seem to be the best the ACC has to offer. They have been dominant at home in the Watsco Center, and their five conference losses have come by six points or less. Miami has also earned six Quadrant 1 wins this season, more than any other team in the conference, including a head-to-head victory against Virginia back on December 20.

Despite losing three of their starters from last year’s Elite Eight team, the Hurricanes have been just as impressive, if not more so, throughout the 2022-2023 regular season. Their offense ranks among the best in the country, and the team has four players averaging above 13.0 points per game (Isaiah Wong, Jordan Miller, Norchad Omier, and Nijel Pack). Miami also leads the ACC in points per game and field goal percentage and is second in three-point percentage and free throw percentage.

Meanwhile, Virginia has struggled in February, dropping games to Virginia Tech and Boston College and only beating ACC bottom dwellers Notre Dame and Louisville by a combined five points. It would not be surprising to see Virginia get their act together and elevate their level of play in March, but for now, Miami looks like the team to beat in this year’s ACC Tournament.

Best Value: Duke (+450)

The Duke Blue Devils have won more ACC Tournament Championships than any other team, and it would surprise no one if this prestigious program ended up cutting down the nets at Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday, March 11.

The Blue Devils have had a few less-than-stellar performances this season, namely their blowout losses to Purdue, NC State, and Miami. However, Duke has shown that they are more than capable of competing with the ACC’s top teams and have maintained a perfect record at Cameron Indoor Stadium this season.

The Blue Devils lead the conference in rebounding margin and offensive rebounds per game while also having the second-best defense in the league in terms of overall defensive efficiency and opponent points per game.

It is indisputable that Duke has one of the most talented rosters in the country, including three potential first-round picks in the 2023 NBA Draft (Dariq Whitehead, Kyle Filipowski, and Dereck Lively II). As a result, most ACC coaches will be crossing their fingers and hoping that the Blue Devils end up on the opposite side of the bracket.

Sleeper Pick: Pittsburgh (+1200)

Picked to finish in 14th place according to the ACC Preseason Poll, the Pittsburgh Panthers have far and away exceeded expectations for the 2022-2023 season. Jeff Capel has turned this program around and has the Panthers on track to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2016.

After losing three of their first four games to start the season, the Panthers now approach postseason play with one of the best records in the conference. Pittsburgh has already earned five Quadrant 1 wins, including victories over Miami, Virginia, and Northwestern. With upperclassmen Blake Hinson and Jamarius Burton leading the way, the Panthers may very well have what it takes to make a deep run in the 2023 ACC Tournament.

ACC Tournament History

The ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament has been held every year since 1954, with the lone exception being in 2020 when the tournament was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Three of the original seven members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (Duke, North Carolina, and North Carolina State) stand at the top of the rankings for most ACC Tournament Championships won.

The Duke Blue Devils lead the way with 21 ACC Tournament victories, followed by the North Carolina Tar Heels with 18 and the North Carolina State Wolfpack with 10. Georgia Tech and Wake Forest each have four ACC Tournament Championships, while Virginia and Maryland (who left for the Big Ten in 2014) have each claimed three titles.

Since 1997, the ACC Championship Game has featured either Duke or North Carolina (and sometimes both) in 25 of the last 26 tournaments, with the 2021 Georgia Tech-Florida State matchup being the only exception. For as long as the conference has existed, the in-state rivals have dominated the ACC Tournament and the rest of the competition. However, with other ACC programs stepping up and asserting their dominance, could this be one of the few years in which both Duke and North Carolina fail to reach the championship game?

Furthermore, schools like Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Clemson all have a decent shot in 2023 at claiming their first ACC men’s basketball title. The Clemson Tigers, in particular, are desperate for an ACC Championship. They have played in the tournament 68 times and have never been crowned champions.

Meanwhile, the NC State Wolfpack and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons will both hope to win the ACC tournament for the first time since the turn of the century. The Wolfpack men’s basketball team hasn’t won an ACC Championship since 1987, and the Demon Deacons last claimed the title in 1996.

It is clear that the 2023 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament will be an exciting week of basketball with each of the 15 teams doing all they can to earn the hardware and cement themselves as the conference’s best.
