Going into this Buccaneers vs Vikings matchup, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face a ton of uncertainty as to how they are going to look on the field. After Tom Brady’s second retirement, the team brought in Baker Mayfield as his replacement. And while that move represents a significant downgrade on paper, you just never know how things will play out on an NFL field.
A huge help for Mayfield would be some semblance of a running game, which was absent for the Bucs a season ago. Tampa Bay finished last in the league in rush yards per game in 2022, averaging 76.9 yards per contest. If the Bucs can improve that facet of their game this season, starting with this Week 1 contest, they could make up for any drop-off in their aerial attack.
Minnesota Vikings
Last year, the Minnesota Vikings made the playoffs, losing in the first round to the New York Giants. But they were involved in close game after close game, boasting a negative point differential despite going 13-4. Here, the Vikings will look to put together a more convincing start to their 2023 season as they take on a Buccaneers team in the middle of a transitional period.
Minnesota’s offense should be just fine in this season opener, as their duo of Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson will do great things together once again. But the defense of the Vikings will be the question, even against a turnover-prone quarterback like Mayfield.
