Super Bowl 54 has its two participants as the AFC Champions Kansas City Chiefs take on the NFC Champions San Francisco 49ers on Sunday February 2, 2020 in Miami.
Kansas City is back in the Super Bowl for the third time in franchise history and the first time since the 1969 playoffs. The Chiefs have gone 1-1 in their Super Bowl appearances having beaten the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV and losing to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl I. Head Coach Andy Reid will be coaching in his second Super Bowl after losing, as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 39.
San Francisco is back in the Super Bowl for seventh time in franchise history and will look to improve to 6-1 in the big game. The 49ers last were in the Super Bowl back in during the 2012-2013 season when they fell to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl 47. San Francisco last won the Super Bowl during the 1994-1995 season when they knocked off the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl 29. This will be Kyle Shanahan’s first Super Bowl as a head coach, but he famously was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons teams that blew a 28-3 lead against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 51.
Below is my best bet for Super Bowl 54 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. All lines are from FanDuel Sportsbook
Kansas City Chiefs (-1.5) vs San Francisco 49ers: O/U 52.5 points (-110/-110)
Once again the Kansas City Chiefs dug themselves a first quarter deficit, going down 10-0, but once again were able to storm back and beat the Tennessee Titans 35-24 in relatively comfortable fashion. After going down 17-7 midway in the second quarter the Chiefs went on 28-0 run to put this game away. Patrick Mahomes threw for 294 yards, and three touchdowns, and also run for 53 more yards and another touchdown to lead the Chiefs to Super Bowl 54. Kansas City is 12-5-1 against the spread and the over has hit in 10 of their 18 games this season.
For the second time this season San Francisco ran Green Bay right out of Northern California. Using a 27-0 halftime lead, the 49ers came away with a 37-20 win in a game that was nowhere near as close as the score. It was the rushing attack that led the way for San Francisco as Raheem Mostert ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. San Francisco is 11-6-1 and the over has hit in nine of their 18 games this season.
Series History: These two teams have met 13 times in the past and San Francisco leads the all-time series 7-6. They have never met in the Super Bowl.
Game Prediction: Patrick Mahomes wins the Super Bowl MVP as Andy Reid finally gets the only thing he has not accomplished in the NFL. Back Kansas City -1.5 in Super Bowl 54.
