The opening week of the NFL season is one that brings optimism for many teams. But there may not be a team feeling better about the start of this season than the Washington Commanders, who have a new quarterback and a new organizational structure around him. Arizona Cardinals
While the Washington Commanders may feel good going into the 2023 NFL season, the Arizona Cardinals certainly do not. Kyler Murray is unavailable to start this season at quarterback, and they let Colt McCoy go late in the preseason. That means either Joshua Dobbs or Clayton Tune will get the start in this Cardinals vs Commanders Week 1 game, which may not bode well for Arizona.
With that said, it will be interesting to see how the Cardinals perform early in the season on the defensive side of the ball. They went defense-first with their new head coaching hire in Jonathan Gannon, as they look to turn around a team that allowed the second-most points in the NFL a season ago.
Washington Commanders
For the Washington Commanders, the start of a new era kicks off with Week 1 of this NFL season, or at least that’s what they hope. The Commanders are no longer owned by Daniel Snyder, one of the worst owners in the history of professional sports. As a result, fan enthusiasm is back, as is the optimism that the Commanders franchise can once again be a legitimate contender in the NFL.
This game kicks off the first full season of Sam Howell’s career as an NFL quarterback. He looked excellent in the preseason, especially in the Commanders’ win over the Baltimore Ravens that ended Baltimore’s historic preseason winning streak. But Howell will need to sustain that level in the regular season against first-team defenses, with the Cardinals serving as a great starting opponent for him.
