Head to Head
Teams Last 10
This game will be played at Soldier Field at 1:00 PM ET on Sunday, September 11, 2022.
Why Bet The Bears:
✅ Numbers including last season’s data like the 49ers to win by just under seven points, but their change at quarterback could work against them here. This will be Trey Lance’s first full year as an NFL starter, and there are likely to be some growing pains as he takes the team over from Jimmy Garoppolo once and for all. That will benefit the Bears in this contest, even if the Bears may be in for a rough season of their own.
✅ There has been glowing praise for the progress made by Justin Fields this offseason after his rough rookie season. Fields looked strong in the limited preseason action that he saw, and appears to be on track to take a big step forward in the second year of his professional career. Expect more from Fields starting with this game, as the Chicago Bears should finish better than 27th in points per game like they did a season ago.

✅ This is a numbers play more than anything else in favor of the Bears. Getting Chicago at the key number of seven points is certainly a plus in the first week of the season, where elite teams like the Niners may not be at their best. This is especially true on the road, where the Niners posted an unsustainable 6-3 mark in the 2021 season.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers made the decision to stick with Trey Lance as their starting quarterback this offseason. They were unable to offload Jimmy Garoppolo via trade, and have decided to keep him around as well, which could make things very interesting if things do not go well with Lance early in the season. In Week 1, the Niners look to get Lance off to a good start against a Bears team that they beat in Chicago just a season ago.
In last year’s meeting between these teams, the Niners trailed 16-15 going into the fourth quarter before running away with things in the final 15 minutes of play. Jimmy Garoppolo threw for over 300 yards with no interceptions in that game, contributing two rushing touchdowns as well. With Lance in at quarterback instead of Garoppolo, it will be interesting to see how similar or different this game is to the one these sides played in 2021.
Chicago Bears
This is a huge year for the Chicago Bears from a developmental standpoint, and it starts with a game against the runners up in the NFC from a season ago. Matt Eberflus is the new head coach in Chicago, while Justin Fields enters year two as a professional quarterback. Whether or not the Bears get any better than they were last season will fall largely on the shoulders of those two men, starting with Week 1 against the 49ers.
The success of the Bears will also fall on their defense, which underwent a ton of changes in the offseason. Akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack are the most notable departures from a defense that lost quite a bit of talent from a season ago. But against a quarterback in Trey Lance just taking over as the Niners’ permanent starter, the remaining members of the Bears defense will be expected to keep them in contention in this season opening affair.
