Chicago Bears Betting Preview
The Chicago Bears lost 10 straight games to finish the 2022 NFL season, going from 3-4 to 3-14 when all was said and done. That level of ineptitude netted the Bears the top pick in the NFL Draft, which they traded to the Carolina Panthers so that Carolina could draft its franchise quarterback in Bryce Young. Now the Bears come into 2023 with Justin Fields at quarterback, as they hope he turns into a more productive passer. Here, we break down the upcoming season for Chicago and make our prediction for their season win total in our 2023 Chicago Bears season preview.

Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: DJ Moore, Tremaine Edmunds, Darnell Wright
Key Departures: David Montgomery, Riley Reiff
This offseason was a success for the Bears, in that they brought in another wide receiver for Justin Fields in the form of DJ Moore. Moore has played for a bunch of losing teams in his NFL career, so expecting him to turn Fields into some kind of elite passer is a stretch. But this is a step in the right direction, as was replacing Riley Reiff with another tackle in Darnell Wright in the draft.
Chicago Bears Offensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 5.3 (T-17th) | 4.9 (T-26th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 5.4 (1st) | 4.2 (T-20th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 6.9 (T-18th) | 6.7 (24th) |
Points Per Game | 19.2 (23rd) | 18.3 (27th) |
Turnovers | 25 (T-27th) | 29 (T-29th) |
Last year’s Chicago Bears offense was one of the worst passing teams in the NFL, as they simply did not have a quarterback capable of moving the ball through the air. While Justin Fields and his legs helped the Bears to be a real threat on the ground offensively, this team needs to be more well-rounded when they are in possession of the football. That will be up to Fields to make happen this year, especially with another receiving target in his huddle.
Chicago Bears Defensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 6.1 (31st) | 5.3 (T-10th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 4.9 (T-26th) | 4.4 (T-16th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 7.7 (32nd) | 6.8 (T-22nd) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 27.2 (32nd) | 23.9 (21st) |
Takeaways | 23 (T-14th) | 16 (T-26th) |
Defensively, the Bears were just terrible in 2022, as they ranked dead last in points allowed. Tremaine Edmunds should help with that to some degree, but he will not be able to solve everything in Chicago. The defensive backfield for this team will need to step up in a big way, as they allowed nearly eight yards per pass attempt to their opponents a season ago.
Positives & Negatives
For the Bears, the potential for offensive improvement is their biggest positive. Justin Fields showed he could improvise and make plays with his legs last year. If the passing comes, the Bears could be a scary team in a division that is up for grabs in the coming season.
However, the Bears don’t know for sure that Fields is going to be capable of making pass plays on a consistent basis. On top of that, the Bears defense was terrible last season, which is something to be worried about going into this year. It feels like the Bears could either be a contender or terrible this season depending on how those couple of factors go for them.
2023 Chicago Bears Win Total Prediction: Over 7.5 Wins
Our projections have the Bears winning eight or nine games this season. Given how up in the air the NFC North is this year, that could be enough to snag a division title, especially if the Lions do not live up to the hype. But we expect some progress from Fields in the passing game, and for the Bears to go just over their season win total.
