Offseason Transactions
Key Additions: Byron Murphy, Marcus Davenport, Jordan Addison
Key Departures: Patrick Peterson, Dalvin Tomlinson, Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen
It was an offseason of big additions and subtractions for the Minnesota Vikings this season. They lost multiple key Dalvins, including Dalvin Cook, along with Patrick Peterson and Adam Thielen. But they did a good job of replacing most of those losses, as they made multiple additions on defense and drafted wide receiver Jordan Addison out of USC. Overall, the changes made in Minnesota should not hurt that badly.
Minnesota Vikings Offensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 5.5 (T-11th) | 5.7 (T-10th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 4.1 (T-25th) | 4.3 (T-15th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 7.1 (T-10th) | 7.4 (T-11th) |
Points Per Game | 24.9 (8th) | 25.0 (13th) |
Turnovers | 23 (T-17th) | 13 (T-1st) |
Offensively, the Vikings were excellent moving the ball through the air, but struggled being an efficient rushing team. That is one of the reasons they opted to move on from Dalvin Cook and hand the keys to the backfield to Alexander Mattison on a more permanent basis. But the focal point of this team will remain its passing game through Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson regardless.
Minnesota Vikings Defensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 5.9 (T-29th) | 5.7 (T-26th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 4.5 (T-20th) | 4.7 (T-30th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 7.4 (30th) | 6.9 (T-24th) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 25.1 (30th) | 25.1 (24th) |
Takeaways | 25 (T-8th) | 24 (13th) |
On defense, the Vikings were flat out bad this past season, ranking in the bottom-three in yards per pass attempt and points allowed. Concerning is the fact that the Vikings were that bad defensively despite being top-10 in takeaways. The addition of Marcus Davenport could really help a pass rush that needs to get home more often, but that might not be enough to fix this defensive unit in 2023.
Positives & Negatives
Having the best wide receiver in football is always a positive, and that is what the Minnesota Vikings have in Justin Jefferson. Jefferson is so good at creating separation, but also at winning contested catches, that there is no way to take him away consistently. As long as he stays healthy, the Vikings offense will always have some kind of threat.
On the negative side, the defense in Minnesota was terrible last year, and could still struggle despite some offseason improvements. This team could be in for another year of suspenseful shootouts. That will be great for fans like us, but terrible for a team that could use a few easy victories.
2023 Minnesota Vikings Win Total Prediction: Over 8.5 Wins
While the Vikings do have a glaring weakness going into this season in the form of their defense, they still have enough firepower to be over .500 in 2023. We expect the Vikings to grab somewhere between nine and 11 wins this season, and will gladly take the over as this team could repeat as NFC North champions in a division that took a step backwards with the Packers’ trade of Aaron Rodgers.
