Key Additions: CJ Gardner-Johnson, Cam Sutton, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs
Key Departures: Jamaal Williams, D’Andre Swift
The Lions backfield is going to look very different this year than it did a season ago. Gone are Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift, and in are Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Overall, this shouldn’t be too devastating for the Lions, as Gibbs is getting some serious hype from a fantasy perspective this year. Additionally, the Lions made a couple of nice defensive additions in Gardner-Johnson and Sutton, which is great for this up and coming team.
Detroit Lions Offensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play | 5.9 (T-4th) | 5.2 (T-20th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt | 4.5 (15th) | 4.4 (T-10th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt | 7.6 (6th) | 6.5 (27th) |
Points Per Game | 26.6 (5th) | 19.1 (25th) |
Turnovers | 15 (1st) | 23 (T-17th) |
There are a few key items to look at statistically from last year’s Lions offense. First, they gave the ball away fewer times than any other team in the NFL, and Jared Goff deserves a ton of credit there. If Goff can avoid turnovers again this season, the Lions could really have something special on their hands.
Additionally, a lot of being made about Swift and Williams being replaced by Gibbs and Montgomery in the backfield. But the Lions were a positively average rushing team in terms of yards per carry. Their moves in the backfield might not be as problematic as anticipated for them.
Detroit Lions Defensive Stats
2022 (Rank) | 2021 (Rank) | |
---|---|---|
Yards Per Play Allowed | 6.2 (32nd) | 5.9 (T-29th) |
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed | 5.2 (30th) | 4.4 (T-16th) |
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed | 7.5 (31st) | 7.6 (T-31st) |
Points Per Game Allowed | 25.1 (T-28th) | 27.5 (31st) |
Takeaways | 22 (T-17th) | 19 (T-21st) |
Detroit’s defense was the only thing holding the team back last year. They were terrible both from a yardage and scoring standpoint, finishing in the bottom-five in most major defensive categories. They have attempted to patch up their defensive backfield in the offseason, which was seriously banged up. But the question for this team is whether that will be enough.
Positives & Negatives
The offense of the Detroit Lions has the potential to be one of the best in the NFL this year, and is the main reason for the hype surrounding the Lions in preseason NFL betting markets. Jared Goff finally looked like a quarterback that was drafted at the top of his draft class, and the young receiving group on this team is going to continue to be dangerous, which is this team’s biggest positive.
On the negative side, the Lions defense stunk last year, and could do the same this season. Any improvement from that side of the ball could springboard the Lions to a playoff berth, but that improvement is anything but guaranteed.
2023 Detroit Lions Win Total Prediction: Over 9.5 Wins
We were high on the Lions going into last season, and they rewarded us by going over their season win total. We expect more of the same this year from Detroit, as they should hit the 10-win mark and compete for the NFC North title. We will gladly take the over on their season win total going into the 2023 campaign.
