The UNC Wilmington Seahawks come into the CAA Championship Game riding high, having beaten two of the top-five teams in the Colonial in the conference tournament already. They beat fifth-seed Drexel and second-seed Hofstra over the last two days to advance to the championship game. Now they are tasked with beating top seeded Charleston for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
For UNCW, the key to this game is going to be finding a way to defend the prolific offense of Charleston effectively. They did a good job of that in the first meeting between these teams, holding Charleston to 71 points in Wilmington. But they gave up 93 points in their second matchup in Charleston, and the Seahawks will not be able to afford that bad a defensive showing again.
Charleston Cougars
For the Charleston Cougars, this season has been simply incredible. They are 30-3 this season going into the CAA title game, a title game they enter on a nine-game winning streak. But all of that work could be for naught if they fail to deliver in this contest, as there is no guarantee the selection committee would choose them for an at-large bid.
In this tournament, Charleston took care of business against Stony Brook and fourth-seed Towson. The Cougars have been unspectacular offensively, at least relative to their usual standard, in this tournament thus far. They are averaging 75.5 points per game through two tournament games, and may need to do more than that to claim the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament from the CAA.
