The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights are NCAA Tournament bound after winning the Northeast Conference semifinals over St. Francis (PA). If that sounds strange, well, that’s because it is. With Merrimack still in their transitional period after moving up to Division I, the Knights received the NEC’s NCAA Tournament bid by virtue of being the last team standing aside from Merrimack in the NEC Tournament.
Here, the Knights will look to get a win that they do not need, but that they certainly want. Winning the NEC title would mean another banner in their gym and some extra confidence going into the NCAA Tournament. But to get that win, they will need to find a way to breach a Merrimack defense that allowed just 62.2 points per game on the year.
Merrimack Warriors
Merrimack has done well in the Northeast Conference since moving up to Division I in 2019, including this year when they won the NEC regular season title. Due to NCAA rules about teams moving up to Division I, they will not be able to participate in the NCAA Tournament until next season. But while tonight’s NEC Championship Game cannot get them a bid to the Big Dance, it can get them their first Division I conference tournament championship.
The Warriors play a very different style of basketball than Fairleigh Dickinson. They average 15.7 fewer points per game on offense, but allow 13 fewer points per game on defense.
