The American Athletic Conference takes center stage Friday, October 16, 2020, when the #17 SMU Mustangs (4-0, 1-0) visit the Tulane Green Wave (2-2, 0-2). SMU is currently tied for second in the AAC and Tulane is tied for last. This game will air live on ESPN at 6:00 p.m. EST.
SMU is rolling offensively as they are averaging 44.0 points per game and 558.8 yards per game, 339.3 through the air and 219.5 on the ground. Defensively, the Mustangs are allowing 23.3 points and 412.5 yards, 248.3 passing and 164.3 rushing.
Tulane has also been solid on offense as they are averaging 37.0 points per game and 386.8 yards per game, 145.5 through the air and 241.3 on the ground. Defensively, the Green Wave are allowing 31.0 points and 395.3 yards, 271.3 passing and 124.0 rushing.
Below is my pick for the #17 SMU Mustangs at Tulane Green Wave. All odds are from BetMGM Sportsbook.
#17 SMU Mustangs (-7) at Tulane Green Wave: O/U 68.0 (-110/-110)
Last time out, SMU hosted the #25 Memphis Tigers and came away with a tight 30-27 win. SMU led 24-3 early in the second quarter, but Memphis scored the final 17 points of the half to make it a 24-20 lead heading into the half. The offense slowed down in the second half and it took a Chris Naggar 43-yard field goal with nine second left to win the game for SMU. Shane Buechele threw for 474 yards and three touchdowns and wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr. went off for five catches for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
Tulane will be disappointed as they went to face the Houston Cougars, forced five turnovers, and still lost 49-31. The Green Wave led 24-7 early in the second quarter, and 31-28 midway through the third, but Houston scored the 21 points to get the win in their season opener. Tulane scored two defensive touchdowns in this one, one interception return and one fumble return, so it could have been ever uglier.
Series History: SMU has won the last five meetings in the series to tie up the series record at 13 wins a piece.
