The 9th edition of the Pac-12 Championship game is set for Friday night at Levi’s Stadium when the #5 Utah Utes take on the #13 Oregon Ducks. This will be the final Pac-12 Championship game in Northern California as the game moves to Las Vegas next season.
Utah came in ranked #5 in the College Football Playoffs and should get into the playoffs with a win and a #4 Georgia Bulldogs loss in the SEC Championship game. However, #6 Oklahoma could also jump the Utes if the Sooners beat #7 Baylor Saturday. The Utes will be playing in their second consecutive Pac-12 Championship game as they look to rebound from their poor showing last season. Utah scored just three points and fell 10-3 to Washington. A win Friday would be Utah’s first ever Pac-12 championship and would see them win 21 games for the first time since 2008.
Oregon is set to play in their third Pac-12 Championship game and are currently 2-0 in these games. The Ducks won the first Pac-12 Championship game in 2011 and then went back in 2014 and won again. A win would tie Oregon with Stanford for the most championship game wins. Winning Friday would also see the Ducks win 11 games in a season for the first time since 2013.
Below is my pick for the #5 Utah Utes vs the #13 Oregon Ducks. All lines are from the William Hill Sportsbook.
#5 Utah (-6.5) vs Oregon: O/U 46.5 points (-115/-105)
Utah extended their winning streak to eight games with an easy 45-15 win over Colorado in their regular season finale. The Utes trailed 7-0 after the first quarter, but outscored the Buffs 17-0 in the second quarter and never looked back. Since their shocking loss to USC, which could cause the Utes to miss the playoffs, Utah has won seven of their eight games by at least 18 points. Their lone single digit win during this stretch was a 33-28 road win at Washington. The Utes are 1-0 this season against ranked teams having beaten then #17 Arizona State, 21-3, earlier this season. Utah is 9-3 against the spread and the under has hit in eight of their 12 games this season.
Oregon bounce backed from their disappointing loss two weeks back to knock off rivals Oregon State 24-10. The Ducks never trailed in this one, but it was a one possession game until Oregon scored a touchdown with just 1:15 left in the fourth quarter. Oregon’s playoff chances came to an end with a disappointing 31-28 road loss to Arizona State a few weeks back, but a Pac-12 Championship will help ease those wounds a little bit. The Ducks are 1-1 against ranked teams this season as they lost 27-21 to then #16 Auburn in the season opener, but beat then #25 Washington 35-31 in the middle of the season. Oregon is 6-6 against the spread and the under has hit in seven of their 12 games this season.
Series History: Utah came away with a 32-25 victory last season, but it is Oregon who leads the all-time series 22-10.
Game Prediction: Utah -6.5 is the play Friday night.
