2023 Independence Bowl Analysis
In this year’s Independence Bowl, we get a matchup between the Cal Golden Bears and Texas Tech Red Raiders. Cal comes into this game having won three straight games just to get to bowl eligibility with six wins. The question will be whether they can sustain that momentum after some considerable time off in order to finish their season with a victory over their opponents from the Big 12.
For Cal, defensive consistency has been a question mark for them this year. They were torn up by elite offensive teams like USC and Oregon this year, but did a great job late in the season to lock down opponents like UCLA to get into a bowl game. Where Cal’s defense lands in this game is anyone’s guess, though Texas Tech’s lack of consistent play on the offensive side of the ball could work in Cal’s favor.
Independence Bowl History
The Independence Bowl has been played since 1976, making it one of the oldest bowl games in the rotation to this day. As far as conference tie-ins are concerned, this game is in an interesting position, as there is the potential for teams from the Pac-12, Conference USA, the AAC, and the Big 12 that could take part, though the Pac-12 is being eliminated from the mix. Independent programs are also involved in select years.
