A member of this year’s rookie quarterback class will take center stage on Sunday, when the Houston Texans visit the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1. CJ Stroud had a prolific collegiate career, and will look to prove himself as an NFL quarterback in his first chance against a Ravens team that will have Lamar Jackson back on the field. Houston Texans
The Houston Texans were one of the worst teams in the NFL last season, going 3-13-1. But with that rough season came the opportunity to draft CJ Stroud out of Ohio State to play quarterback for them. Stroud will get his first chance to play professional football in a game where the Texans are a sizable underdog.
How Houston approaches this game from a playcalling perspective will be interesting to monitor. Stroud is still likely picking up his first ever NFL offensive system, which could mean a less complex game script than he’ll be given later in the year. But the key for Stroud will be to avoid turnovers and manage this Texans vs Ravens game no matter what plays are called.
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens went 10-7 last season and made the playoffs, despite Lamar Jackson missing significant time due to injury. Jackson is back for the start of this season, and the Ravens will look to get off to a strong start with him under center. But for that to happen, they will need to protect him and keep him on the field in 2023, starting with this Week 1 affair.
Also important for the Ravens in this game will be their pass defense, which went through lapses for significant portions of the season last year. They blew several double-digit leads early in the year when Jackson was on the field, and they will need to avoid letting Stroud gain any momentum to avoid a similar fate in this season opener.
