Over the last few seasons, the Buffalo Bills have been one of the best teams in the NFL. This year, the New York Jets will look to join them in that territory, as they have made an upgrade at the quarterback position this past offseason. The Buffalo Bills fell in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs a season ago, losing at home to the Cincinnati Bengals. They look largely the same as they have the last few years, but will the weight of falling short in the AFC year after year lead to a regression in 2023? We will find out, starting with this Bills vs Jets Week 1 contest.
In this game, the Bills would be in much better shape if they can find some sort of success with their running game. Being able to keep the defense of the Jets off-balance would be massive, and finding rushing yardage without Josh Allen having to scramble would help accomplish that. While the bread and butter of the Bills offense is always going to be its passing attack, but running the ball will also be key.
New York Jets
There is plenty of excitement surrounding the New York Jets going into this season, as Aaron Rodgers is set to take over as their starting quarterback. After struggling with Zach Wilson and some less than stellar backups over the last couple of seasons, they are expected to make a huge leap forward in 2023. But NFL games are not decided on paper, and the Jets offense has to actually deliver on the field to meet their expectations this year.
Fortunately, the Jets defense will be there to help the offense, as the AFC occupants of MetLife Stadium ranked fourth in scoring defense a season ago. They will likely be elite again this year, which will reduce the pressure on Rodgers and company to put up big offensive numbers as they learn how to operate together as an offense.
