The Washington Nationals (11-11) take on the Colorado Rockies (10-14) today in the deciding game of a three-game series. Anibal Sanchez (0-2 4.91 ERA) of the Nationals goes up against German Marquez (2-1 2.25 ERA).
Sanchez has made four starts this season, only lasting a total of 22 innings and has allowed at least two earned runs in each start, with a total of 12 earned runs. His last two starts have been against struggling offensive teams (Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates). Sanchez owns a 1.55 WHIP and has struck out 17 against 11 walks.
Marquez has made five starts this season, and two of them have been shutouts, including a complete game one-hitter against the San Francisco Giants back on April 14th (lost no-hitter in the 8th). Marquez has allowed three hits or less in three of his starts this season and has a WHIP of 0.97 (tied for seventh best in the N.L.). In 32 innings this season Marquez has 30 strikeouts and eight walks.
The Nationals bullpen is one of the worst in baseball. They managed to pitch three scoreless innings yesterday to get the win, something that I don’t think they can do again. Sanchez doesn’t go very deep into games, so the bullpen may need to pitch four or more innings in this one, giving them more time to implode. Marquez has been the Rockies best pitcher this season and should give them a great chance to get a win today. After a slow start offensively, the Rockies offense is averaging over five runs per game in their last nine. The offense should be able to keep the runs coming today against a questionable Nationals pitching staff.
