Two struggling A.L. teams meet to begin a three-game series this evening. The Toronto Blue Jays (23-42) head to Baltimore to take on the Orioles (20-45). Trent Thornton (1-4 4.73) will be making the start for the Blue Jays and will be going up against John Means (5-4 2.67 ERA) of the Orioles.

Thornton started the season with five scoreless innings against the Detroit Tigers. Since then, it has been mostly rocky for the Blue Jays pitcher. Seven of Thornton’s last 12 starts he has allowed three or more earned runs, none of which he lasted more than six innings. In 13 starts, Thornton has only pitched 64/23 innings, which is just under five innings per start on average. He has allowed 11 home runs in his last 12 starts.

John Means has been the Orioles best pitcher so far this season. He has one of the best WHIPs in the A.L. at 1.07. His first three appearances this season were out of the bullpen where he went 5 ⅔ innings and only allowed one earned run. Since then he has made 10 starts and has allowed one run or fewer in seven of those starts. Means’ great season has been shadowed by the subpar play of the Orioles.

As bad as the Orioles are, the Toronto Blue Jays aren’t much better. Their record is only three games better on the season and the Orioles have a better offense than the Blue Jays. Throw their best pitcher on the mound and the Orioles are in a great position to win this game, especially at home. I like Means to continue his great season and pick up the win for the Orioles. Two struggling offenses with a good pitcher on the mound for one of them, I like the UNDER in this game as well.
