Date & Time: April 5, 2019, 4:35 PM (EDT)
Location: Oracle Park San Francisco, California
Betting Odds: Rays-124/Giants+113
Total O/U: 7
The Tampa Bay Rays (5-2) travel to San Francisco to take on the Giants (2-5). The Rays will be sending out Tyler Glasnow (1-0) to battle against the Giants’ Dereck Rodriguez (1-0).
Both pitchers lasted five innings in their first outing of the season, and both picked up a win. Glasnow struck out four Astros in his opener and gave up just one earned run. Rodriguez only allowed four hits in his five innings and struck out two while walking none and surrendering two earned runs against the San Diego Padres.
Neither of these teams features a great offense, but instead have been relying on their pitching. The Rays have been the best pitching staff in baseball so far in this young season, giving up a league-best 1.6 runs per game. The Giants come in at ninth in the league at 3.4 runs allowed per game. The Rays have also given up the least amount of hits in the league at 5.7 per game.
Despite struggling on offense, the Rays have been able to steal bases when they get hits. They are second in baseball in total steals (8), the Giants only have one. Not only have the Rays been pitching good and stealing bases, but they have been a tremendous fielding team and have yet to commit an error this season.
This should be a low scoring affair, and Glasnow should have a better performance of the two starting pitchers. The Rays will find ways to maximize their hits and manufacture runs by smart baserunning and timely hitting. The Rays pitching and defense will be too much for a struggling offense like the Giants to overcome today.
