After having the first game postponed, the Tampa Bay Rays (17-9) are looking to take the final two games of the series against the Boston Red Sox (11-16). The Rays will be sending out early season Cy Young candidate Tyler Glasnow (4-0 1.53 ERA) to go up against seven-time All-Star Chris Sale (0-4 7.43 ERA).

Glasnow has been the best pitcher in a Rays rotation that has been one of the best in baseball so far this season. The Rays allow the least amount of runs per game in the Majors (3.1) and Glasnow’s ERA is third-best among all qualified pitchers. In 29 ⅓ innings, Glasnow has 29 strikeouts to only six walks with a WHIP of 0.92.

Sale has not been himself so far this season. The strikeouts are still there (24 in 23 innings) but everything else has been a disappointment. The season has slowly started to head into the right direction after a terrible start for Sale, in his last outing he went five innings and only allowed two earned runs. However, watching Chris Sale pitch this season compared to seasons past, it is clear something just isn’t the same with Sale.

The Red Sox are in the bottom ten of hits, AVG, SLG, OPS, HR’s, and runs scored per game this season. Going up against Glasnow and the Rays pitching staff that is in the top four of every single major pitching and defensive category, it should be expected that the Red Sox will have a hard time finding runs. Even if Sale improves on his last start and manages to go six-plus and only allow one earned run, Glasnow should be right there pitch-for-pitch with Sale. Once we hit the bullpens the advantage stays with Tampa Bay and that is where they should separate themselves from the Red Sox if they haven’t already done so by that point. The Rays are a good hitting and base running team, I expect them to play a lot of “small ball” today and manufacture some runs with situational hitting and baserunning.
