It is do or die in San Diego on Friday, October 2, 2020, as the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres play game three of their three game series. Game two really made it feel like the playoffs were underway and game three is the perfect ending to this series. This game will air live on ESPN at 7:00 p.m. EST.
Game two was one of the wilder games we’ve seen this season as San Diego came from behind to win 11-9. St. Louis jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, and a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning, but the entire game got turned upside down in the bottom of the sixth inning. Superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. sparked the rally with a three-run home run and Manny Machado followed him with a game tying solo home run. In the bottom of the seventh, Will Myers hit a go-ahead solo home and Tatis Jr. added insurance with a two-run bomb. St. Louis cut the lead to one, in the top of the eighth, but another Will Myers home run gave the Padres a three-run advantage. What a wild, and fun, game.
Below is my pick for the St. Louis Cardinals at San Diego Padres. All odds are from BetMGM Sportsbook.
St. Louis Cardinals (+100) at San Diego Padres (-110)
Pitching Matchup: Jack Flaherty (4-3, 4.91 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) vs TBD
Jack Flaherty was not as bad as his ERA says in 2020 as one poor start cost him his season. In the middle of September, Flaherty faced the Milwaukee Brewers and allowed eight hits and nine earned runs in just 3.0 innings of work. Flaherty pitched four other times in September and allowed 14 hits and eight earned runs combined in 18.2 innings pitched. The Cardinals wouldn’t want anyone else on the mound in a do or die game.
The San Diego Padres have not announced a starting pitcher because they do not have any ready to pitch. This will be a bullpen game for the Padres in a do or die game three.
MLB Predictions: I am worried about the Padres pitching, so I am going to back the St. Louis Cardinals.
