The biggest NL Central series of the season so far concludes Monday, September 7, 2020, when the St. Louis Cardinals (17-15) visit the Chicago Cubs (23-18) in the fifth and final game of their series. St. Louis sits in second place in the NL Central and is just 1.5 games back of these Chicago Cubs. The Cardinals have a 2.5 game leads over the third place Milwaukee Brewers. This game will air live on ESPN at 4:00 p.m. EST.
St. Louis has dominated this series and are starting to look like the best team in the NL Central. Chicago rode the arm of Yu Darvish to come away with a 4-1 win in game one, but it has been all St. Louis since. The Cardinals then swept a double header on Saturday thanks to a 4-2 win in game one and 5-1 win in game two. St. Louis then jumped on Jon Lester, on Sunday Night Baseball, to come away with a 7-3 win.
Below is my pick for the St. Louis Cardinals at the Chicago Cubs. All odds are from DraftKings Sportsbook.
St. Louis Cardinals (+155) at Chicago Cubs (-186)
Pitching Matchup: Johan Oviedo (0-1, 4.30 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) vs Kyle Hendricks (4-4, 3.78 ERA, 1.12 WHIP)
Johan Oviedo is set to make his fourth career start and the rookie will look to pitch into the sixth inning for the first time. In his three starts, Oviedo has given up a combined nine hits and seven earned runs in 14.2 innings pitched.
Kyle Hendricks has made eight starts this season and has been brilliant in six of those starts, but has gotten lit up in two starts. In his two bad starts, Hendricks has given up a combined 11 earned runs and 17 hits in just 10.1 innings pitched. In Hendricks other six starts he has given up 10 earned runs and 33 hits in 40.1 innings.
The St. Louis Cardinals have been a below average offense this season as they have just a .246 batting average, .340 on base percentage, .394 slugging, and a .734 OPS. St. Louis has just 30 home runs and 138 RBI’s through 32 games.
Chicago has also been a below average offensive team as they are hitting .229, have a .327 on base percentage, .416 slugging, and a .743 OPS. The Cubs have 59 home runs and 180 RBI’s through 41 games played.
