The first game of a three-game series between the Seattle Mariners (35-47) and Milwaukee Brewers (42-36) pits Marco Gonzalez (8-6 4.38 ERA) of the Mariners against Zach Davies (7-1 3.06 ERA) of the Brewers.

Gonzalez’s overall numbers this year are average at best, but he has had some solid outings this season. In his 17 starts this season, 10 of those Gonzalez has allowed two earned runs or less, pretty good numbers. The reason for his inflated ERA and WHIP (1.37) is partly due to back-to-back games against the Texas Rangers last month. Gonzalez went eight innings in those two starts and allowed 17 hits and 16 earned runs. Gonzalez is 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA in his last three starts.

Davies was one of the best pitchers in baseball up until May 22nd. Since then, his season has started to take a turn for the worst. In his six starts since May 22nd, Davies has pitched 29 ⅔ innings, allowed 19 earned runs, given up six home runs, and allowed 41 hits. Seven of Davies 15 starts this year he has allowed one earned run or less, only one of which was since May 22nd.

The Mariners offense has started to hit well again, scoring 40 runs in the last five games. The Brewers are struggling as of late despite winning their last two games. Gonzalez is a hot pitcher right now and Davies has been in decline the past five weeks. I like Seattle and their hot bats and hot pitcher to pull the upset today. The Brewers are struggling and Davies is as well. The Mariners biggest issue has been their pitching this season, but a solid performance tonight from Gonzalez should give this team what it needs to win. Seattle should put up enough runs in this game to help cover the OVER as well.
