The Seattle Mariners will wrap up their five-game road trip Wednesday night with the closing contest of a two-game interleague series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, so here’s the best Mariners vs. Dodgers betting pick, as the MLB action goes on with 15 games on May 12, 2021.
The Dodgers opened as -220 favorites to win the opener Tuesday night and are listed at -240 odds to beat the Mariners in the closer, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. Excluding their Tuesday’s encounter, the Dodgers have won 11 of their previous 14 meetings with Seattle.
The Mariners have started to decline
The Seattle Mariners have dropped nine of their last 14 games and were tied with Houston for the second spot in the AL West yesterday. They played very well in April, but over the last two weeks, the Mariners have started to show signs of slowing down.
Seattle is scoring 4.06 runs per contest (23rd in the majors) on a .210 batting average (tied-29th) and a .370 slugging percentage (24th). The Mariners hit just eight doubles in May while batting a terrible .204.
On the other side of the ball, the Mariners are yielding 4.49 runs per game (20th in the MLB). Justin Dunn will toe the slab Wednesday, and the 25-year-old righty has been solid so far this season, posting a 1-0 record in five starts along with a 3.51 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 22/17 K/BB ratio.
Dunn hasn’t lasted more than 5.2 frames in any of his five starts this term. He met the Dodgers once in 2020 and yielded six earned runs on five hits across a couple of innings.
The Dodgers are desperate to get things going
The reigning champs are in serious crisis. They’ve lost 17 of their previous 22 games overall while struggling with injuries along the way to drop to the third spot of the NL West standings. Cody Bellinger, Zach McKinstry, and Edwin Rios are all sidelined alongside relievers Scott Alexander and Corey Knebel.
Through the first 12 days of May, the Dodgers have had the best on-base percentage in the majors (.366), but they’ve struggled mightily to score. Also, the Dodgers have posted the 11th-highest ERA during that stretch (4.52), so they are yielding 4.06 runs per game on the season (10th in the MLB).
Julio Urias will take the mound Wednesday, and the 24-year-old southpaw is 4-1 in seven starts this season. He’s sporting a solid 3.59 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 46/6 K/BB ratio, but Urias got pounded hard in the last week’s 9-2 defeat at the Los Angeles Angels.
The lefty yielded five earned runs on eight hits through five frames of work while striking out four Angels. Urias already met the Mariners on April 20 and tossed seven scoreless innings while punching out 11. He’s 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA in a couple of career starts against Seattle.
- 5-14 in the last 19 games played in May
- 3-11 in the last 14 games against the Dodgers
- 7-2 in the last nine home tilts against Seattle
- 12-6 in the last 18 games against the American League
The Dodgers possess plenty of talent, so I’m expecting them to overcome injuries and start playing at a much higher level, especially on the offensive end. On the other side, the Mariners have been awful at the plate recently, but that’s been expected.
Julio Urias dominated the Mariners in April, while Justin Dunn is not a guy you can trust. The Mariners’ relievers are seventh in the majors with a 3.20 ERA, but I’m still looking for the Dodgers to win this game by two or more runs.
Pick: Take Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 at -115
The current Dodgers are 4-for-9 against Justin Dunn, as both Mookie Betts and Corey Seager took him deep last season. Dunn was beaten hard in just two innings of work, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dodgers score five or more runs early in this game.
Therefore, I’m going with the over on the totals, but the hosts to cover still seems like the best Mariners vs. Dodgers betting pick for Wednesday night.
Pick: Go over 8.0 runs at -105
