The Seattle Mariners (12-2) are going for the sweep of the Kansas City Royals (2-9) today. Mike Leake (2-0 2.92 ERA) will be the pitcher trying to do so, while the Royals will counter with Jorge Lopez (0-1 4.09 ERA).

Leake has given up two earned runs in both of his starts this season. The first one he lasted six innings, the second start he made it one out further by lasting six ⅓ innings. The 31-year-old may not be pitching any complete games anytime soon, but if Leake can get through six or more innings only allowing three or fewer runs, then the hot-hitting Mariners should have no problem getting the sweep.

Trying to prevent the sweep, Lopez had a rough start to his season but rebounded nicely in his last start. The White Sox tore Lopez up in his first start, chasing him after five innings by scoring four runs, including two home runs. Lopez followed that start with a nice six inning, five-hit game that only saw him give up one earned run, despite walking three. However, it was against the Detroit Tigers, the second-worst offense in baseball at the moment.

This Mariners offense cannot be stopped right now. They tied the 2002 Cleveland Indians as the only teams since 1908 to homer in each of their first 14 games. They have also tied the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals for the most homers through 14 games (34).

The Mariners have scored at least runs in all but one game this season. The best team in baseball through the first two weeks, I can’t see them being stopped by Lopez and the Royals today. The Mariners move to 13-2 today, but the game will be lower scoring than expected with some nice pitching by both teams to start before the Mariners pull away late.
