The San Francisco Giants head to Petco Park in San Diego on Monday night to start a three-game series against the San Diego Padres, so here’s the best betting pick for the opening clash of this NL West showdown.
The Padres are firm -170 moneyline favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, while the Giants are listed at +157 odds to win straight up. Last season, San Diego won eight of its ten encounters with San Francisco.
The Giants got blanked in Seattle
The San Francisco Giants opened the 2021 MLB season with a three-game set at the Seattle Mariners. After an 8-7 defeat in ten innings on an Opening Day and a 6-3 victory in the middle contest, the Giants suffered a 4-0 defeat in the closer this past Saturday.
San Francisco posted a .226 batting average and a .443 slugging percentage through its first three outings of the new season. The Giants smacked six home runs and are tied with Colorado for the most in the majors, but their pitching staff recorded a 4.50 ERA, allowing 19 hits and 16 walks through 26 innings.
Anthony DeSclafani will make his debut in the Giants’ uniform Monday in San Diego. The 30-year-old right-hander spent the previous five years with Cincinnati, and last season, he went 1-2 in seven starts and a couple of relief appearances while posting a terrible 7.22 ERA. DeSclafani hasn’t met the Padres since 2019, and he’s 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four career starts against San Diego.
The Padres failed to sweep Arizona
The San Diego Padres started their campaign with a four-game home set against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They tortured the D-backs through the first three games of the series, but the Padres fell apart in the closing contest on Sunday afternoon and suffered a 3-1 defeat as massive -205 favorites.
Rookie Taylor Widener tossed six scoreless innings, as the Padres just couldn’t catch the right rhythm at the plate. On the other side, Chris Paddack was charged for a loss, allowing a couple of earned runs on four hits and three walks through four innings of work.
Adrian Morejon will toe the slab for the Padres on Monday, and the 22-year-old southpaw was 2-2 in four starts and five relief outings with the Padres in 2020. Morejon posted a 4.66 ERA and 1.24 WHIP along with a 25/4 K/BB ratio in 19.1 innings of work. He’s 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two career starts and one relief app against the Giants.
- 2-12 in the last 14 games against San Diego
- 4-9 in the last 13 road contests
- 20-9 in the last 29 games at home
- 16-6 in the last 22 outings as favorites
Through their first three outings of the season, the Padres recorded a .305 batting average (4th in the MLB) and a .526 slugging percentage (5th). They couldn’t get things going in the closing clash of the Arizona series, so I’m backing them to bounce back Monday and beat the Giants in front of the home fans.
Anthony DeSclafani had a rough 2020 season, and I’m not expecting a significant improvement this term, especially not in his first start for the Giants. The Padres’ prolific offense should make all the difference here.
Pick: Take San Diego Padres at -170
The Giants allowed 15 runs in three games against Seattle, scoring 13 in a return, so I have to take the over in this one against the Padres. San Francisco could score a few runs off Morejon, while I’m expecting the Padres to hit hard all night long and surpass a 5-run mark.
Three of the previous four encounters between these two NL West foes went in the over, producing nine or more runs in total. Also, the over is 4-1 in the Giants’ last five outings on the road, and it is 5-3 in the Padres’ previous eight showings at Petco Park.
Pick: Go over 8.5 runs at -110
