An interesting interleague battle begins on Monday, August 17, 2020, when the San Diego Padres (11-12) visits the Texas Rangers (10-10) in game one of a four-game home and home series. The Padres sit in fourth place in the NL West and now find themselves five games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers thanks to this five-game losing streak. Texas are a surprise team this season and currently sit in third place in the AL West, five games back of the first place Oakland Athletics. This game will air live on FS1 at 9:05 p.m. EST.
San Diego is in a real downslide and they are coming off a weekend sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Besides for the Friday 5-1 loss, this series was a complete toss-up. Arizona won game two 7-6 with San Diego having the tying run thrown at home to end the game. The Diamondbacks then came away a 5-4 win on Sunday thanks to a three-run bottom of the eighth inning.
Texas is coming off a series win against the Colorado Rockies and have won four of five games overall. Texas won the first game 3-2 and then clinched the series win with a 6-4 win on Saturday. Texas went for the sweep on Sunday, but Colorado put five runs in the bottom of the second inning and cruised from there.
Below is my pick for the Major League Baseball showdown between the San Diego Padres at Texas Rangers. All odds are from SugarHouse Sportsbook.
Odds: San Diego Padres (-134) at Texas Rangers (+115)
Pitching Matchup: Zach Davies (2-2, 2.78 ERA, 18K) vs Jordan Lyles (1-1, 6.06 ERA, 12K)
Zach Davies has had a nice start to 2020 and he will look to continue that form down in Arlington. Davies started off the season with back-to-back five inning, three run performances, but has been lights out since. The veteran faced Arizona two starts back and held the Diamondbacks scoreless in 5.2 innings of work, and then held the Los Angeles Dodgers to two runs, and four hits, in seven innings.
Jordan Lyles has had a tough start to 2020 and he will look to get through six innings for the first time this season. Lyles started off the season with a scoreless relief appearance, but followed that up with a four earned run, four innings start against the San Francisco Giants. It has not gotten better for Lyles as he gave up three runs in 5.1 innings against the Los Angeles Angels and four earned runs in five innings against the Seattle Mariners.
Fernando Tatis Jr. is the entire San Diego Padres offense as he currently leads them in batting average (.300), home runs (9), RBI’s (21), on base percentage (.382), and hits (27). The Padres go as far as Tatis Jr. takes them.
The Texas Rangers are led by two players at the plate – Todd Frazier and Joey Gallo. Frazier leads the Rangers in batting average (.317), on base percentage (.394) and hits (20). Gallo leads the Rangers with five home runs and 11 RBI’s.
The San Diego Padres will be without relief pitcher Kirby Yates and center fielder Wil Myers is listed as day-to-day.
Texas won’t have the services of relief pitcher Nick Goody, starting pitchers Edinson Volquez and Brett Martin, and catcher Robinson Chirinos.
History: The Texas Rangers lead the all-time series 23-18 and have won the last two season series against San Diego.
MLB Predictions: Give me the Texas Rangers in this one.
2020 Picks Record: 28-14
