An interesting interleague battle continues Friday, September 18, 2020, when the San Diego Padres (32-19) “visit” the Seattle Mariners (22-28) in game one of their three games series. Due to the wildfires out west, this game will be played in San Diego. The Padres are in second place in the NL West and trail the Dodgers by four games and lead the third place Giants by six games. Seattle is in third place in the AL West and are three games back of the second place Houston Astros. If the playoffs started today, San Diego would be the fourth seed in the playoffs, playing the Miami Marlins in the first round, and the Mariners would be the first team out of the playoffs. This game will air live on ESPN+ at 9:40 p.m. EST.
The Padres hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers for a massive three game series and ended up losing two of the three games. San Diego won the first game 7-2 but dropped the final two games of the series 3-1 and 7-5.
Seattle faced the San Francisco Giants in a quick two game series and dropped both games. San Francisco won game 9-3 and followed that up with 6-4 win on Thursday.
Below is my pick for the San Diego Padres at Seattle Mariners. All odds are from BetRivers Sportsbook.
Odds: San Diego Padres (-178) at Seattle Mariners (+154)
Pitching Matchup: Chris Paddack (3-4, 4.74 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) vs Yusei Kikuchi (2-3, 5.35 ERA, 1.19 WHIP)
Chris Paddack is set to make his 11th start to 2020 and will look to stop alternating good and bad outings. In his last six starts, Paddack has alternated giving up four plus earned runs, or one of less earned run. This season Paddack has pitched 49.1 innings and allowed 51 hits and 28 runs (26 earned).
Yusei Kikuchi is set to make his eighth career big league start and will look to turn things around. Kikuchi has given up three plus earned runs in five of his seven starts in 2020. For the season, Kikuchi has pitched 37.0 innings and allowed 33 hits and 22 earned runs.
The Padres have been an exciting team at the plate this season and it shows in the numbers. Third baseman Manny Machado leads the team with a .314 batting average, .377 on base percentage, and 41 RBI’s. Right fielder Wil Myers leads the way with a .626 slugging and .984 OPS. Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. has cooled off since his red-hot start, but still leads the team with 15 home runs.
It has been the Kyle Lewis show in Seattle this season as the rookie center fielder leads the Mariners with a .291 batting average, .385 on base percentage, .480 slugging, .865 OPS, and 10 home runs. Third baseman Kyle Seager leads the team with 31 RBI’s.
MLB Predictions: I am going to back the San Diego Padres Friday night.
