An interesting interleague battle continues Saturday, September 5, 2020, when the San Diego Padres (24-16) and Oakland Athletics (22-13) play game two of their three game series. San Diego is in second place in the NL West, six games back of the Dodgers and five games ahead of the Rockies, while Oakland leads the AL West by two games over the Houston Astros. This game will air live on FS1 at 4:10 p.m. EST.
San Diego jumped all over Oakland in game one of this series as the Padres came away with a 7-0 win. Zach Davies was solid on the mound, and Fernando Tatis Jr. remained hot at the plate, to lead San Diego to the win.
Below is my pick for the Major League Baseball showdown between the San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics. All odds are from BetMGM Sportsbook.
San Diego Padres (-108) at Oakland Athletics (-108)
Pitching Matchup: Chris Paddack (3-3, 4.43 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) vs Sean Manaea (2-2, 5.64 ERA, 1.42 WHIP)
Chris Paddack will look to put together two consecutive good starts for the first time in 2020. Paddack has made eight starts this season and has given up two runs of less in four starts, three runs or less six times, and six runs twice. Last time out, Paddack held the Colorado Rockies to five hits and two runs (zero earned) in six innings pitched.
After a rough start, Sean Manaea has started to turn the corner with three good starts in a row. Manaea allowed four plus runs in each of his first four starts, but has really turned it around his last three trips to the mound. In his last three starts, Manaea has allowed a combined seven runs (four earned) and 14 hits in 15.1 innings pitched.
It has been the Fernando Tatis Jr. show in San Diego this season as the shortstop leads the Padres in every major offensive category. Tatis Jr. has a .308 batting average, .392 on base percentage, .654 slugging, and .046 OPS. The MVP candidate, Tatis Jr., also leads the team with 14 home runs and 37 RBI’s.
It has been a poor season at the plate for Oakland and team high numbers will bear that out. Left fielder Robbie Grossman and designated hitter Mark Canha lead the Athletics with a .267 batting average. Grossman also leads the team with a .546 on base percentage, and a .972 OPS. Third baseman Matt Chapman leads Oakland with a .563 slugging percentage and is tied with first baseman Matt Olson with a team high 10 home runs. Right fielder Stephen Piscotty has a team high 26 RBI’s.
MLB Predictions: I like the Oakland Athletics to bounce back with the win Saturday afternoon.
2020 Picks Record: 43-29
