San Diego Padres at Oakland Athletics – MLB Odds, Preview & Prediction – 09/04/20

An interleague battle between two World Series contenders kicks off Friday, September 4, 2020, when the San Diego Padres (23-16) visit the Oakland Athletics (22-12) for game one of a three game series. San Diego sits in second place in NL West, six games back of the first place Dodgers and four games ahead of the third place Rockies. Oakland leads the AL West by two games over the Houston Astros. This game will air live on MLB Network at 9:30 p.m. EST.

San Diego played a quick two game series against the Los Angeles Angels and came away with a split. The Padres jumped on the Angels for an 11-4 win on Wednesday but lost 2-0 in the series finale Thursday.

The Oakland Athletics have not played a game since August 29th as their past week was wiped out due to a positive COVID case. Prior to their shutdown, Oakland lost the first two games of their series with Houston.

Below is my pick for the Major League Baseball showdown between the San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics. All odds are from BetRivers Sportsbook.

San Diego Padres (+123) at Oakland Athletics (-139)

Pitching Matchup: Zach Davies (5-2, 2.61 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) vs Jesus Luzardo (2-1, 3.74 ERA, 1.37 WHIP)

Zach Davies has had a brilliant season for the San Diego Padres as the righty has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his seven starts, though he did give up four unearned runs his last time on the mound. In six starts in August, Davies has given up a combined 23 hits and 14 runs (10 earned) in 36.1 innings pitched.

Jesus Luzardo hits the mound for the eighth time this season, and his sixth start, looking to build off two quality starts in a row. Luzardo struggled to start 2020, but in his last two starts the lefty has given up a combined 11 hits and three earned runs in 13 innings pitched.

Batting Stats:

The San Diego Padres have the eight best batting average (.262) in the majors, the fourth best on base percentage (.341), the best slugging (.484), and the best OPS at .825. San Diego has been mashing the ball this season as they are second in the majors with 69 home runs and lead the league with 215 RBI’s.

Oakland has the fifth worst batting average (.224), 13th worst on base percentage (.323), 13th worst slugging (.409), and 11th worst OPS at .732. Oakland is middle of the pack with 47 home runs and 156 RBI’s.
