The MLB betting action continues Wednesday night with the National League showdown at Petco Park in San Diego, so I’ve prepared the best Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Diego Padres betting pick along with the latest odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
The Pirates and Padres wrap up a three-game set, and the hosts won the opener Monday night as -177 favorites, 2-0. These two foes already played and split a four-game set in Pittsburgh back in April, while the Pirates have won seven of their last ten encounters with the Padres excluding the middle contest of this series.
San Diego opened as a firm -240 fave to win the closing clash Wednesday. The Pirates are listed at +215 moneyline odds, while the totals sit at 7.0 runs.
Pittsburgh failed to score Monday, dropped the fifth straight contest
The Pittsburgh Pirates fell to 12-16 on the season following a 2-0 defeat at the Padres on Monday, extending their losing streak to five games. The Bucs failed to score for the second straight outing (3-0 loss to St. Louis on Sunday) while recording just four hits against the Padres’ pitching staff.
Pittsburgh owns the fourth-lowing scoring offense in the majors. The Pirates score only 3.64 runs per game while slashing .223/.305/.347, and their slugging percentage is the second-worst in baseball. On the other side of the ball, the Bucs allow 4.64 runs per contest (20th in the MLB).
JT Brubaker will take the hill Wednesday, recording his sixth start in 2021. The 27-year-old right-hander is 2-2 with an excellent 2.63 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 30/5 K/BB ratio across 27.1 innings. Brubaker tossed five frames in a 7-3 loss to the Cardinals last week, yielding three earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven. He’s never met the Padres before.
San Diego continues to struggle offensively
The San Diego Padres improved to 17-13 on the season with that narrow win over Pittsburgh in the opener, but it was another disappointing performance by their offense. The Padres had only three hits against Tyler Anderson and the Pirates’ bullpen but managed to record their fourth win in the last five outings.
San Diego tallies just 3.93 runs per game (tied-23rd in the majors). The Padres’ batting average of .232 is below the league average, while their slugging percentage of .361 is the fourth-worst in baseball. San Diego heavily leans on its pitching staff, allowing 3.43 runs per game (2nd in the MLB).
Yu Darvish will toe the slab Wednesday, looking to improve his 3-1 record out of the first six starts in 2021. The 34-year-old righty sports a 2.13 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 49/11 K/BB ratio across 38 innings of work, and he’s already defeated the Pirates on April 12. Darvish yielded just one earned run on three hits to Pittsburgh while punching out six.
- 0-5 in the last five games overall
- 4-1 in the last five games overall
Since an Opening Day, Yu Darvish has allowed exactly one earned run in each of his five starts. Last time out, Darvish fanned 12 in 6.1 frames of work against San Francisco, and I’m expecting him to continue with a strong performance.
Also, I’m looking for the Padres’ bats to finally get things going and hit well against JT Brubaker who’s been terrific so far this season. San Diego’s offense will have to break out of its slump eventually, and this home matchup with the Pirates looks like a nice opportunity for the Padres. Give me the hosts to cover, as they did it in 13 of their previous 16 wins.
Pick: Take San Diego Padres -1.5 at -130
The totals are a tricky wager because of that 7-run line, though both starters have been terrific thus far, as well as their relievers. The Padres’ bullpen is fifth in the majors with a 2.82 ERA, while the Pirates’ relievers are 10th with a 3.61 ERA.
I’m going with the over, but the Padres to cover is still my best betting pick here. Eight of the last 11 encounters between San Diego and Pittsburgh produced eight or more runs in total, and the Padres could easily score six or more on their own if they find a good rhythm at the plate.
Pick: Go over 7.0 runs at +105
