The Oakland Athletics ( 19-23) begin a two-game series up in Seattle against the Mariners (20-23). Mike Fiers (3-3 5.48 ERA) of the A’s goes up against Yusei Kikuchi (2-1 3.54 ERA) of the Mariners. Both teams will be looking to their starting pitching today to help them get back on a winning path.
Fiers is coming off of his second career no-hitter. Prior to that start, Fiers ERA was 6.81, including 23 earned runs in his last 22 innings. Fiers started against the Mariners back on March 20 in that oddly scheduled opening series. He only went three innings and allowed five earned runs while picking up the loss.
Kikuchi’s last three starts totaled 15 ⅔ innings (due to a one inning start on April 26 to limit his innings for the season, as Japanese typically only pitch once a week) and he has only allowed two earned runs. Kikuchi is starting to pitch better as the season goes on and he gets acclimated to the MLB.
Pitchers have traditionally crashed back to earth following a no-hitter. 17 of the last 22 pitchers to throw a no-hitter posted a higher ERA in their immediate start following the no-hitter, 1.54 runs higher to be exact. So look for Fiers to have a down-to-earth game in his start today. Kikuchi has been great as of late and holds a 1.06 WHIP with 38 strikeouts in 48 ⅓ innings. I think Kikuchi has the better day of the two pitchers and the A’s 20th ranked offense won’t be able to score much in this one. Seattle has gone down hill since starting the season 13-2, but their offense should be enough today to get the win and the UNDER should be the smart bet in this one as well.
