It is win or go home in the American League Division Series when the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays battle it out in game five on Friday, October 9, 2020. Tampa Bay is technically the home team in this final game, so it will be interesting to see if that comes into play at all, even though the game is being played in San Diego. This game will air live on TBS at 7:10 p.m. EST.
Game four ended up being the best pitching performances of the series as the New York Yankees came away with a 5-1 win. The Yankees started Jordan Montgomery, who allowed three hits and one earned run in 4.0 innings pitched, then moved on to a bullpen that pitched a scoreless final five innings. Luke Voit (solo) and Gleyber Torres (two-run) each hit key home runs in this do or die game four for New York.
Below is my pick for the New York Yankees vs Tampa Bay Rays. All odds are from BetMGM Sportsbook.
New York Yankees (-152) vs Tampa Bay Rays (+132)
Pitching Matchup (Playoffs): Gerrit Cole (2-0, 3.46 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) vs Tyler Glasnow (2-0, 4.91 ERA, 1.18 WHIP)
Gerrit Cole has been rock solid this postseason and will look to be the horse once again on Friday. Cole pitched game one of this ALDS series and received a win after pitching six innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs. The righty allowed two Rays home runs, one to Randy Arozarena and the other to Ji-Man Choi but dished out just two walks and struck out right batters. Cole has yet to hold the Rays to less than three earned runs this season, but he is backed by a powerful Yankees offense so that is all he needs to do in this win or go home game five.
Tyler Glasnow took the mound in game two of this ALDS and he was good enough to get the win and even this series up. Glasnow pitched five innings, struck out 10 Yankees, allowed three hits, and four earned runs. The righty did have some control issues as he walked three batters in those five innings and allowed two earned runs, both to the red-hot Giancarlo Stanton. Glasnow has been hit or miss against the Yankees this season as he’s allowed four, two, zero, and four earned runs in his four regular season and postseason starts.
This is a fantastic pitching matchup worthy of a win or go home playoff game.
MLB Predictions: I like the New York Yankees to get the win and to advance to the American League Championship Series.
