The slumping New York Mets (10-8) continue their road trip by heading to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals (10-8) in the first of a three-game series. The Mets will be sending out Jason Vargas (1-0 14.21 ERA) to try and turn his season around against Adam Wainwright (1-1 3.94 ERA).
Vargas has made three appearances so far this season, yet has only pitched 6.1 total innings. Vargas’ first start of the season was a good one, by his standards, as he lasted five innings and only allowed two earned runs against the Miami Marlins. Since then Vargas has made two appearances and has given up eight earned runs in 1 ⅓ innings.
Wainwright’s season has been heading in the opposite direction. His first start of the season was a bit rough, only lasting four innings and surrendering four earned runs while walking four against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has since rebounded and has only allowed three earned runs in his last two outings, including a six inning one earned run game against the San Diego Padres.
Vargas’ struggles this season have many wondering if the Mets will be replacing him in the bottom of their rotation. If he has another bad game again today, those talks will only magnify. The pressure will be on Vargas today to have a good game, and that will only cause Vargas to struggle even more. Wainwright will have a tough test against a good Mets offense, but with the run support he will get from his team due to Vargas’ pitching, Wainwright should be able to get the win today even if he gives up four or five runs in six/seven innings. The runs should pile up in this one, but with Vargas and the Mets bullpen, the Cardinals will put up way too many runs for even the Mets offense to compete with.
