A heavyweight pitching matchup is set for Wednesday, September 16, 2020, when the New York Mets (21-27) visit the Philadelphia Phillies (24-23) for game two of a three game series. If the playoffs started today the Phillies would be the seventh seed in the NL and would have to face the Chicago Cubs in the first round. New York is currently 12th and three games out of the final playoff spot. This game will air live on ESPN at 7:00 p.m. EST.
In game one, Jake Arrieta was dominant for 5.1 innings, before leaving with a hamstring injury, and Didi Gregorius hit a two-run bomb to lead the Phillies to a 4-1 win. This was a massive win for Philadelphia who is coming off losing five of seven games to the Miami Marlins.
Below is my pick for the New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies. All odds are from DraftKings Sportsbook.
Betting Odds: New York Mets (-143) at Philadelphia Phillies (+123)
Pitching Matchup: Jacob deGrom (4-1, 1.67 ERA, 0.87 WHIP) vs Zack Wheeler (4-0, 2.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP)
Jacob deGrom, the best pitcher of the last five season, has continued to just shut down every hitter he faces in 2020. deGrom has made nine starts this season and has allowed zero runs in two starts, one earned run in four starts, and two earned runs in three starts. The two-time reigning Cy Young winner has not allowed more than three earned runs in a start all season, though he did allow three unearned runs in a recent start. deGrom could be raising his third consecutive Cy Young in a few weeks’ time.
Zack Wheeler has been one of the most impactful free agent signings as the righty has been dealing all season long. Wheeler, the former New York Met, has given up two earned runs or less in six of his eight starts in 2020. In September, Wheeler has pitched in two games and allowed three earned runs and 11 hits in 12.2 innings pitched.
The Phillies have been balanced on offense this season, especially as of late, and there are multiple players leading the team in the major categories. Shortstop Didi Gregorius leads the team with a .282 batting average and 31 RBI’s, right fielder Bryce Harper leads with a .404 on base percentage, and first baseman Rhys Hoskins leads with an .887 OPS. Catcher J.T. Realmuto leads with a .527 slugging and 11 home runs.
Right fielder Michael Conforto has had a great 2020 as he leads the Mets with a .341 batting average and .427 on base percentage. Left fielder Dominic Smith leads the team with a .626 slugging, 1.022 OPS, and 38 RBI’s. The Polar Bear, first baseman Pete Alonso, leads New York with 11 home runs on the season.
MLB Picks: I am backing the New York Mets Wednesday night.
