The Minnesota Twins (53-30) continue their six-game road trip with a three-game series in Oakland against the Athletics (46-39). Jake Odorizzi (10-3 2.73 ERA) gets the start for the Twins and Daniel Mengden (2-1 4.03 ERA) for the A’s.
Odorizzi will be making his 17th start of the season and looking for his 11th win. Odorizzi has been one of the top pitchers in the A.L. this season but has struggled a bit in his last three starts. In his last three starts, Odorizzi has given up 11 earned runs, more than he gave up from April 10th-June 9th. Nine of Odorizzi’s 16 starts this season he has allowed one earned run or less. He has 94 strikeouts in 85 ⅔ innings and a 1.07 WHIP.
Mengden has been splitting his season between the Majors and the Minors this year. He has made four starts and six total appearances on the season. His last start was his best of the season (six scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals). Prior to that start, Mengden allowed 13 earned runs in 23 innings. Walks have been an issue in his losses, which has ballooned his WHIP to 1.48 on the year.
The Twins second-ranked offense should be trouble for Mengden today. Although he has only allowed one home run so far this season, the Twins are the best home run hitting team in baseball. In fact, they are the best team in baseball in a number of offensive categories (Hits, AVG, SLG, OPS, and HR). Odorizzi is putting together a strong year, despite his recent decline. Today is a good opportunity for him to bounce back as his offense provides him with plenty of run support against a pitcher who has spent most of his season in the Minors. The Twins get the win behind another solid Odorizzi performance and an even better offensive performance. Look for the OVER to cover in this game as well.
