Total O/U: 9.5

The Minnesota Twins (48-25) and the Kansas City Royals (25-49) begin a four-game series tonight. Jake Odorizzi (10-2 2.24 ERA) hits the mound for the Twins in Game 1 and will be going up against Royals’ pitcher Glenn Sparkman (1-3 4.01 ERA).

Odorizzi has quietly been having one of the best seasons on the mound of any pitcher. He is in the top 10 in baseball in ERA, WHIP, BAA, and wins. His last start wasn’t his best, allowing four earned runs in six innings to this same Royals team that he is facing today. Prior to that start, Odorizzi made eight starts where he only allowed four earned runs in 47 ⅔ innings. Odorizzi has nine starts this year where he has allowed one earned run or less.

The majority of Glenn Sparkman’s season has been spent in the bullpen. He will be making his sixth start of the season tonight. His last start was against the Twins where he allowed four earned runs in five innings, a game where he got the loss an Odorizzi got the win. His last four starts Sparkman allowed 11 earned runs in 18 innings, including four home runs. Sparkman has 11 walks in 42 ⅔ innings this season and only 23 strikeouts.

The Twins offense is still number one in baseball in runs per game. Odorizzi is not only one of the best pitchers in the A.L., but in all of baseball. Going up against Kansas City’s 21st ranked offense, Odorizzi should continue his hot season, rebounding from his not so stellar outing last time against the Royals. The Twins should smack the ball around against Sparkman and hand him his third consecutive loss. The Twins should put up enough runs in this one to help cover the OVER as well. They are number one in baseball in home runs and Sparkman has already allowed six in his limited innings so far this season.
