The biggest series of the season, so far, begins on Monday, September 14, 2020, when the Minnesota Twins (30-18) visit the Chicago White Sox (30-16) for a four-game AL Central showdown. Chicago leads the AL Central by one game over these Twins and 4.5 games over the Cleveland Indians. If the playoffs started today, the White Sox would be the top seed in the AL, playing the Cleveland Indians, and the Twins would be the four seed, playing the Toronto Blue Jays. This game will air live on ESPN+ at 8:10 p.m. EST.
Minnesota hosted the Cleveland Indians over the weekend and swept them right out of Minnesota. The Twins came away with a 3-1-win on Friday, followed that up with an 8-4-win Saturday, and finished off the sweep with a 7-5-win on Sunday.
Chicago hosted the Detroit Tigers and came away with a weekend sweep. The White Sox came away with a tight 4-3-win Friday, blew the Tigers out 14-0 on Saturday, and finished off the sweep with a 5-2-win on Sunday.
Below is my pick for the Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox. All odds are from BetRivers Sportsbook.
Minnesota Twins (-132) at Chicago White Sox (+112)
Pitching Matchup: Jose Berrios (4-3, 4.40 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) vs Dylan Cease (5-2, 3.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP)
Jose Berrios is set to make his 10th start of 2020 and will look to continue his recent good form. In his last four starts, Berrios has given up a combined seven earned runs and 15 hits in 22.2 innings pitched. Prior to that, in five starts, Berrios gave up a combined 16 earned runs and 27 hits in 24.1 innings pitched.
Dylan Cease is set to make his 10th start of 2020 and has been fantastic in eight of his previous nine starts. Besides for his opening start of the season, Cease has not allowed more than three earned runs in any start this season. In August, Cease pitched 33.2 innings and allowed just 24 hits and eight earned runs (12 runs total) the entire month. It has been a somewhat tough September for Cease as the righty has given up five earned runs and nine hits in 10.0 innings pitched.
It has been the Nelson Cruz show this season for Minnesota as the designated hitter leads the team with a .331 batting average, .420 on base percentage, .669 slugging, 1.089 OPS, 16 home runs, and 32 RBI’s. Cruz is tied for the MLB lead with those 16 home runs and is second in slugging and OPS. AL MVP?
Shortstop Tim Anderson is having another brilliant season for Chicago as he currently leads the team with a .362 batting average, .402 on base percentage, and .981 OPS. Anderson leads the majors with that .362 batting average. First baseman Jose Abreu has also been impressive as he leads Chicago with a .619 slugging, 15 home runs, and 48 RBI’s. Abreu leads the majors with his 48 RBI’s, is tied for second in home runs, and is top 10 in slugging.
MLB Picks: I am backing the Chicago White Sox to get the win Monday night.
