Two of the best teams in the National League begin a three-game series today. The Milwaukee Brewers (24-19) travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies (24-16) in a possible playoff preview. Brandon Woodruff (5-1 4.25 ERA) gets the call for the Brewers and will go up against Jerad Eickhoff (2-1 1.50 ERA) of the Phillies.

Woodruff has a nice record, due to the run support he has received, but his 4.25 ERA is a little higher than the Brewers would like. However, Woodruff has pitched very well as of late. His late three starts he only allowed one earned run in each, but only lasted 16 innings in those three starts. His 54/12 strikeout/walk ratio is another big help to his 5-1 record.

Eickhoff has only made five appearances this season (four starts), but he has been superb in all but one of those appearances. He is coming off of eight scoreless innings and only allowed three hits against a red-hot St. Louis Cardinals team. Three of Eickhoff’s appearances this season have resulted in scoreless outings. His 0.97 WHIP is one of the best in baseball.

Both teams are 7-3 in their last ten games, but the Brewers have lost their last three and the Phillies have won their last three. In their last four wins, the Phillies are outscoring their opponents 29-1. Both teams have had bullpen issues in the past, so despite these two pitchers doing as well as they have been their last few starts, I think this game will see north of 8.5 runs. The Phillies offense is scoring even with Bryce Harper struggling, which is scary. I think the Phillies offense is in a better place right now than the Brewers, so they should get to Woodruff better than the Brewers get to Eickhoff, who I think is the better pitcher of the two. Phillies take it in a high scoring game.
