After splitting the first two of a four-game series, the Miami Marlins (8-18) and the Philadelphia Phillies (14-12) meet again today. Trevor Richards (0-3 3.72 ERA) of the Marlins matches up against Jake Arrieta (3-2 2.65 ERA) of the Phillies.

Richards has made a couple of great starts so far this season, allowing zero earned runs in six innings against the Cincinnati Reds and one earned run in six innings against the Colorado Rockies. However, both of those starts were against teams struggling to find an offense. Today against the Phillies should be a different story as they score nearly five runs per game.

Arrieta has yet to pitch less than six innings in an outing this season and has never given up more than three earned runs in a start. Arrieta pitched against Miami back on April 12th and went seven innings while only allowing one earned run.

Richards has yet to pitch more than 6 ⅓ innings in a start this year and I expect that trend to continue today. His 16 walks in 29 innings this season shows that his command isn’t there and patient Phillies hitters should draw a good number of walks today to help up their run production. Arrieta has been one of the best pitchers in the N.L. so far this season and should have a stat boosting day against the worst offense in baseball. The Phillies pick up another win in a low scoring affair just like yesterday’s 4-0 victory.
