The reigning MLB champions continue their ten-game road trip Monday with the first of a three-game series at Wrigley Field in Chicago, so here’s the best LA Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs betting pick for the opening clash of their National League showdown.
The Dodgers opened as -160 favorites on William Hill Sportsbook, while the Cubs are +150 home dogs with a total of 7.5 runs. These two foes meet each other for the first time since 2019, and the Dodgers have won four of their previous five encounters with the Cubs.
The reigning champs are in serious crisis
The 16-12 Los Angeles Dodgers entered their Sunday’s game in Milwaukee on a three-game losing streak and with a 2-8 record over their previous ten games overall. They were tied with the Padres for the second spot in the NL West, just half a game behind the Giants and 1.5 games ahead of Arizona.
The Blue Crew owns the ninth-most efficient offense in the majors, scoring 4.71 runs per contest. They post the second-best on-base percentage of .340, but the Dodgers’ slugging percentage of .397 is the 12th-best in the MLB.
Walker Buehler will take the mound Monday, and the 26-year-old righty is 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in his first five starts of the season. He’s 0-1 with a 5.27 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in two career starts and one relief appearance against the Cubs.
The Cubs gave struggled mightily over the last ten days
The Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-6 this past Saturday to improve to 12-15 on the season. It was the Cubs’ second win in their last eight outings excluding their Sunday’s clash in Cincinnati, and Chicago has suffered some heavy losses in that stretch including three scoreless displays against Atlanta, 5-0 and 10-0, and Milwaukee, 6-0.
The Cubs are tallying 4.33 runs per game (14th in the majors). They are 25th in the MLB in batting average (.218), 14th in on-base percentage (.310), and 16th in slugging percentage (.386). Kris Bryant leads the way for the Cubs with seven home runs, .308 batting average, and 1.034 OPS, and Chicago’s offense certainly has plenty of room for improvement.
Kyle Hendricks will take the hill for the Cubs on Monday, and the 31-year-old right-hander has been terrible thus far. He’s 1-3 in five starts, posting a 7.54 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, and 21/8 K/BB ratio across 22.2 frames. Hendricks is 2-3 with a 6.00 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in five career starts against the Dodgers.
- 4-1 in the last five games against the Cubs
- 13-6 in the last 19 games against the NL Central
- 2-6 in the last eight games overall
Walker Buehler has owned the Cubs in their previous two meetings back in 2019. Considering the Cubs’ offensive woes this season, I’m expecting Buehler to put on another strong performance, while the Dodgers’ bats should torture Kyle Hendricks.
Over his last three starts, Hendricks has surrendered a whopping 16 earned runs on 24 hits through 13.2 innings of work. He’ll be in big trouble against one of the most potent lineups in baseball, so give me the visitors to win at moneyline odds.
Pick: Take Los Angeles Dodgers at -160
The Cubs are pretty unpredictable despite their offensive problems. I’ve mentioned their three scoreless outings in the last ten days, but the Cubs have also scored six or more runs in four of their previous seven contests.
On the other side, the Dodgers will look to pile on Kyle Hendricks’ misery. Hendricks’ soft pitching could ruin the Cubs’ chances in this one, so I’m backing the over on the totals. Seven of the last ten encounters between the Dodgers and Cubs went in the over.
Pick: Go over 8.0 runs at -110
