Division rivals Los Angeles Dodgers (55-26) and Arizona Diamondbacks (40-41) have the rubber match of their three-game series this afternoon. Tony Gonsolin will be making his major league debut for the Dodgers and will be going up against fellow rookie Taylor Clarke (1-3 6.48 ERA).

Gonsolin is the Dodgers’ fourth-best prospect and was the recipient of last year’s Branch Rickey Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award. In AAA ball this year Gonsolin owns a 2.77 ERA. He has 31 strikeouts in 26 innings and has only allowed one home run. Gonsolin is making the start today to give the Dodgers’ starting pitching staff an extra day of rest as they are in the midst of playing 18 games in 18 days.

Clarke has been having a bit of a rough year in his limited appearances this season. His last three starts Clarke has allowed 13 earned runs in 11 innings, including giving up six home runs. He has allowed eight home runs in seven starts this season. However, Clarke had one of his best starts of the season last time out against the Dodgers three weeks ago, allowing two earned runs in five innings.

Sometimes teams can struggle when they go up against a pitcher making his major league debut, as very few, if any, players have any experience against him. Gonsolin is a solid prospect and should get plenty of run support from his high scoring teammates against a struggling pitcher. I don’t expect him to throw a complete game shutout or anything in that realm, but I think he can hold the Diamondbacks to just a couple of runs over five or six innings. That would be plenty good enough to get the Dodgers a win in this game. Two top ten offenses with two rookie pitchers on the mound, the OVER is the smart bet in this one.
