Two teams that will most likely be fighting for an A.L. Wild Card spot at the end of the season, the Los Angeles Angels (42-43) and Texas Rangers (46-38) begin a four-game series tonight. Jose Suarez (2-1 5.57 ERA) will make his fifth start of the year for the Angels and will face the Rangers best pitcher in Mike Minor (8-4 2.40 ERA).

Suarez made his major-league debut back on June 2nd. In his four starts, Suarez has allowed 13 earned runs, six home runs, and nine walks all in just 21 innings. He has a 1.48 WHIP on the year. Suarez has yet to face an offense as good as the Rangers (5th in runs scored per game).

Minor hasn’t just been one of the best pitchers for the Rangers, but he’s been one of the best in the A.L. as well. Minor got his first all-star nod this season. He has the second-best ERA in the league, 19th-best WHIP, and 22nd-most strikeouts. Nine of Minor’s 17 starts this year he has allowed one earned run or less. He is coming off of two of his best start this season (complete game only allowing one earned run against the Detroit Tigers and eight innings allowing one earned run to the Cleveland Indians). Minor has faced the Angels twice this season and has combined for 15 innings, eight hits, one earned run, and 12 strikeouts (including his first career shutout).

The Rangers are a hot team right now and Minor will be making his first start since being named an all-star. Today is his chance to follow that honor up with a strong start showing why he deserves to be one. The Rangers offense has been number one in runs per game throughout most of the year and is one of the most potent lineups in the league. The young Suarez hasn’t pitched against an offense like this in his life and will probably struggle. The Rangers get the win and thanks to Minor’s pitching, this game stays UNDER as well.
