Why Bet The Red Sox:
✅ Garrett Whitlock has been terrific so far this season, and the 25-year-old right-hander will look to extend his dominance Wednesday against the Angels. Over his two starts and four relief appearances in 2022 (16.2 innings pitched), Whitlock has allowed only one earned run on nine hits and four walks while punching out 20. Last Thursday, the talented righty was charged for a loss in a tough 1-0 defeat at the mighty Toronto Blue Jays. He yielded one unearned run on four hits and a couple of walks across three frames of work. Whitlock hasn’t allowed an earned run since April 8.
✅ As I’ve mentioned in the intro, the Angels haven’t decided who’ll get the starting call Wednesday at Fenway Park. Shohei Ohtani was expected to take the hill, but the reigning American League MVP suffered a groin injury last Sunday and is questionable to pitch Wednesday. The Angels were cautious with Ohtani in 2021, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they move Shohei’s next start to Thursday or even Friday. Los Angeles might opt for a bullpen day, and the Halos’ relievers carried a 3.75 ERA and 4.31 FIP into the Red Sox series.

✅ Tuesday’s opening clash of the series has been excluded from the analysis. The Red Sox desperately needed a win to break out of their funk. They’ve dropped nine of their previous 12 contests, so the Sawx are already losing the pace in the AL East. Their awful run of form at the dish cannot last forever, and I’m expecting the Red Sox to get things going Wednesday against the Angels. Boston is slashing .221/.279/.329 in 544 at-bats on the road and .249/.282/.376 in 229 at-bats at home this season.
Los Angeles Angels
The 15-9 Angels entered the Red Sox series with the best record in the AL West. They’ve won seven of their previous nine contests, including a four-game sweep over the Cleveland Guardians. Still, they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Chicago White Sox last Monday, failing to score a single run for the second time in three games.
The Halos ranked third in the majors in slugging percentage (.419) and second in OPS (.747). Mike Trout and Taylor Ward combined for 11 home runs and 24 RBIs, while Shohei Ohtani had an underwhelming .226/.280/.398 slash line.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox closed down their ten-game road trip last Sunday. They suffered a surprising 9-5 defeat at the Baltimore Orioles. It was Boston’s second loss in a row, as the Red Sox dropped the fourth consecutive series.
After signing a six-year, $140 million contract with the Sawx, Trevor Story is still searching for his first home run in 2022. Bobby Dalbec is slashing a terrible .147/.213/.235, while Rafael Devers and Alex Verdugo have slugged three home runs each.
