Casual baseball followers and non-Astros fans may be wondering when it hasn’t been a good time to bet on the Houston Astros this season. Their pitching staff has been among the best, and their offense is having a great season.
They have remained one of the best teams in baseball despite the turnover in the starting rotation from last season. So, what makes now such a significant time?
A few weeks ago, the team got hit hard with injuries losing Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and George Springer. They managed to keep winning for a while but then what everyone expected finally started on June 16th—a losing streak.
The streak (seven games; longest since they lost seven in a row back in June 2015) finally came to an end Sunday with a 9-4 win over the Yankees in New York. But that is only a small part of the reason why you should bet on them now.
Due to the losing streak, their odds to win the World Series (+550; via BetOnline.ag) and the American League (+250) are longer than they have been all season. Their division odds remain incredibly short at -15000 even though the Texas Rangers don’t appear to be slowing down.
So—why bet on them now?
The whole point behind gambling is to win as much money as you can. With their odds being what they are, fans that place wagers now will win more than their friends that bet on them after their ten-game winning streak in early May.
But why not wait? Why not give their odds a chance to become even longer? Springer isn’t back yet (could be on Tuesday), and neither is Correa (still a long way from returning).
Offense was the primary issue during the losing streak with the team getting shutout once, failing to score more than three runs in five games, and losing by one run in three games. But even the best players, young and old, are prone to lulls throughout the season.
Combine that with two of their best players still being on the IL (Altuve has since returned), and it doesn’t bode well for offensive production. Fans are going to hope that Sunday’s 14-hit, nine-run win over the Yankees is a return to the norm.
However, that will be impossible to know until the next winning streak is underway.
Of course, with the Yankees back at full strength, the AL is far from in the bag for Houston. It is getting harder to ignore how the Twins are playing or the Rays (even though no one is watching them). But even if they do win the AL, the Dodgers are destroying the competition over in the NL with a combination of veteran talent and incredible rookies.
Then again, they were destroying teams during the 2017 season as well, yet that Series worked out well for the Astros.
Houston has gone through some struggles recently, but they still have one of the best pitching staffs in the game and a dangerous offense. They will start winning games again, and their odds will get a lot shorter than they are now.
So, if you are going to bet on them….
