Justin Verlander (6-1 2.51 ERA) returns to Detroit as the Houston Astros (28-15) take on Gregory Soto (0-1 15.75 ERA) and the Tigers (18-22).

Verlander is off to his best start since winning the Cy Young in 2011. At the rate he is currently going, a second one could be a possibility. In 57 ⅓ innings this season, Verlander has 68 strikeouts and an A.L. best o.82 WHIP. Verlander’s lone loss this season came in a 0-1 defeat to the Minnesota Twins. Even when he loses, he pitches great. The bad news for Detroit, Verlander is coming off of his best start of the season, seven scoreless innings only allowing one hit against a high powered Texas Rangers offense.

Soto will be making his second start of the season tonight. His first start didn’t go so well. Soto got smacked around by the Minnesota Twins. He allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in just four innings, his major league debut. Soto had a great season so far in AA (2.03 ERA), but the jump to the Majors hasn’t been kind to him.

The Astros started the season 2-5 and now have a record of 28-15. They are the hottest team in baseball right now and have outscored the Tigers 19-5 in the two previous games of the series. The Astros are now first in the league in runs, hits, hits allowed, batting average, OBP, SLG, OPS, WHIP, and BAA. Aside from stolen bases (17th), the Astros are top five in baseball in virtually every major category.

A Tigers’ offense that ranks second-to-last in runs per game is going to struggle against a hot Verlander. The Astros are currently the most dominant team in baseball and will have no trouble handling the Tigers today. I think the Under hits today due to the Tigers having trouble scoring more than one or two runs.
