Two teams on three-game losing streaks, the Texas Rangers (12-11) head northwest to take on the Seattle Mariners (16-11) with both teams looking to get back into the win column. The Rangers called up one of their top prospects to fill in for the start today, Taylor Hearn (0-0 0.00 ERA), while the Mariners are sending out one of their more reliable pitchers this season in Marco Gonzales (4-0 3.32 ERA).

Hearn is getting the start today for the Rangers due to a lack of pitching depth for Texas. Adrian Sampson was scheduled to start today but was used in relief in yesterday’s 6-5 loss to the Oakland A’s. Through four Triple A starts Hearn is 1-3 with a 4.05 ERA with 26 strikeouts and 10 walks across 20 innings.

Gonzales has already made six starts this season and has yet to give up more than three earned runs in any one start. Gonzales has pitched 38 innings so far this season (second most in the Majors) and has 25 strikeouts with nine walks and a 1.26 WHIP.

Despite being 3-9 in their last 12 games, including a 1-0 loss yesterday, the Mariners still lead the league in runs per game (6.0). The Rangers are not far behind at 5.5 runs (4th). With a Triple A prospect making his first start and a badly beaten Rangers bullpen, the Mariners should have a great chance to get their offense back on track and take Game 1 of this series. Gonzales has surrendered at least one run in every start this season, so the high scoring Rangers should also be able to get a couple of runs on the board in this game which is a good sign for the Over. The Mariners walk the sixth most per game in the Majors and with Hearn having a bit of command issues, the Mariners should get a few runs early and start to pile up the pitch count and eventually add on the runs as Texas starts hitting the bullpen.
