The Major League Baseball betting action goes on with 15 games on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, including the opening contest of a three-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, so here’s the best Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox betting pick.
These two AL Central foes meet for the first time in 2021, and the White Sox open as massive -220 moneyline favorites with a total of 7.5 runs on DraftKings Sportsbook. Chicago is undefeated in nine straight encounters with Detroit, and the Chi Sox will send their top ace to the mound Tuesday.
The Tigers are off to an awful start of the 2021 MLB season
Excluding their Monday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals at home, the Detroit Tigers have dropped nine of their previous ten games overall and are sitting bottom of the AL Central. With a 7-15 record, the Tigers were the worst team in the majors on Monday as well.
Detroit owns the lowest-scoring offense in baseball, averaging only 3.05 runs per game. Furthermore, the Tigers are the worst team in the MLB when it comes to batting average (.205) and on-base percentage (.264), while their slugging percentage of .357 is the third-worst in the majors.
Jose Urena will get the starting nod Tuesday, and the 29-year-old is 0-3 with a 4.57 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 19/12 K/BB ratio. After three straight losses to Minnesota, Cleveland, and Oakland, Urena tossed seven innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh last week, allowing a couple of earned runs on five hits to the Pirates. The righty has never met the White Sox before.
The White Sox search for their fifth win in a row
The Chicago White Sox are coming off an 8-4 victory over Texas this past Sunday. They swept the Rangers in a three-game home series and improved to 12-9 on the season. The Chi Sox have won six of their last seven games overall including the previous four and are sitting at the second spot of the AL Central.
Chicago owns the fourth-highest scoring offense in baseball. The White Sox are tallying 5.14 runs per contest while batting .261 (2nd in the majors) and slugging .408 (8th). Still, they’ve smacked only 21 home runs thus far (23rd), and Jose Abreu leads the way with five round-trippers and 17 RBI.
Lucas Giolito will take the mound Tuesday on a seven-day rest. The 26-year-old right-hander got routed by the Red Sox last time out, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks through one-plus innings. Giolito is 5-2 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in nine career starts against the Tigers.
- 0-9 in the last nine games against the White Sox
- 1-12 in the last 13 road tilts against the AL Central
- 6-1 in the last seven games overall
- 13-2 in the last 15 home tilts against Detroit
The White Sox shouldn’t have any problems outlasting the Tigers by two or more runs. As I’ve mentioned, the Chi Sox are undefeated in nine consecutive games against Detroit, covering a 1.5-run spread on all nine occasions.
Lucas Giolito will be keen to bounce back from his awful performance against the Red Sox. He owned the Tigers last season, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over 12.2 innings of work. Also, I’m expecting Chicago’s offense to stay on the right path against Jose Urena and the Tigers’ bullpen that owns the worst ERA in baseball (6.11).
Pick: Take Chicago White Sox -1.5 at -110
The Tigers’ pitching staff has been terrible so far, so the White Sox could easily score a bunch of runs in this one. However, Lucas Giolito could also easily shut down the Tigers’ bats, so I would stick with the hosts to cover and avoid the totals.
Still, betting on the over seems like a reasonable option, considering Chicago’s powerhouse lineup. Five of the last nine encounters between the White Sox and Tigers went in the over.
Pick: Go over 7.5 runs at -110
